I don't think that "to roger" is "a British slang term for having anal sexual intercourse". My 1995 Concise Oxford Dictionary only gives the following: "v. Brit. coarse slang 1 intr. have sexual intercourse. 2 tr. have sexual intercourse with (a woman)." As it happens – not that it matters overmuch – I am British, and, prior to checking with the dictionary, had always understood “to roger” to mean “to have sexual intercourse with”. I’d further assumed that the term could be applied, like several of its synonyms, to both heterosexual and homosexual coition. My point was that it can’t be restricted to the latter alone. As suggested, I’ve looked at the online edition of the complete OED. This, like the concise edition, gives the basic definition “to copulate with (a woman); to have sexual intercourse with” and provides no fewer than fourteen examples dating from 1711 to 1976. In most instances these relate specifically to male-female interaction; only in one, dating from 1870, does a homosexual connection seem plausible.

I’ve also looked at two editions of Partridge’s justly famous Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English. That from 1989 defines (p. 983) “to roger” as “to coït with (a woman)”, whilst that from 2006, hedging its bets slightly, gives (Vol. II, p. 1633) “from a male perspective, to have sex”. I’d be very interested to know of any reputable source which, in the face of this evidence, insists upon the exclusively anal interpretation favoured by my anonymous interlocutor.
