Two matters are discussed in this article: the correct name for this rock—"Rockall"—situated on a North Atlantic bank and the subject of a sovereignty dispute between Ireland and Great Britain; and secondly, who first discovered and ascended the rock. The answers to these two questions hold no legal significance regarding Ireland's case against Britain's claim. However, the information is worth knowing for its own sake. Furthermore, given that "Rockall" is already frequently mentioned in the news—and will be mentioned far more often as the controversy intensifies—we ought to know the Irish version of its name. In addition, the people of Ireland—and schoolchildren in particular—should be aware of the seafaring experiences of the Irish in the cold northern waters centuries before any other people, and centuries before the English language even existed.
