A fact from Robin Pemberton appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 15 February2008, and was viewed approximately 1,006 times (disclaimer). The text of the entry was as follows:
Did you know... that NASCAR official Robin Pemberton's decision concerning the final outcome of the 2007 Daytona 500 resulted in his brother's team finishing second instead of first?
This article indicates that the race ended under caution and that there was a controversy over exactly when the caution flag was thrown and who was ahead at the "moment of caution".
However, the main Daytona 2007 article, as well as my own memory, indicate that, in fact, the caution was never thrown at all, allowing Martin and Harvick to decide the outcome at the finish line still under green. The ensuing controversy was over whether or not the caution flag should have waved, per the rulebook. If so, when? And, of course, who would have been ahead at that point?
