I am Robert Hoffer, the subject of this biography, declaring my conflict of interest per WP:COI. Per the COI guideline I am proposing this change for review rather than editing the article directly. The text was prepared with research assistance; every statement is tied to the independent source cited next to it.
The article has carried a tone tag since February 2010 and does not cover the subject's documented work since roughly 2010. I propose replacing the article body with the text below. It removes every claim that lacks an independent reliable source (the corporate client list, the scratch-off games claim, the unsourced acquisition price, and the promotional "Inventions" framing), and it adds only statements supported by independent coverage (The New York Times, VentureBeat, TechCrunch, the Computer History Museum, Microsoft, Forbes, ICv2) and USPTO patent records.
Specific points for reviewers:
- The "Botfather" nickname is attributed to VentureBeat (2016) and TechCrunch (2023), not self-applied.
- SmarterChild is described as co-created with Timothy Kay, matching the Computer History Museum record.
- All five issued patents and the three representative pending applications are cited individually to USPTO records via .
- The February 2010 tone tag is removed because the rewrite resolves the promotional tone it flagged; the unsourced material that could not be verified is simply left out.
- No image is included yet; a properly licensed photo will follow through Wikimedia Commons VRT, at which point an
can be added.Robert Hoffer
Proposed replacement text:
Robert Hoffer is an American businessman and software entrepreneur. He co-founded ActiveBuddy and created its chatbot SmarterChild with Timothy Kay, one of the first commercial instant-messaging chatbots, and later co-founded the digital comics platform GlobalComix. The technology press dubbed him "the Botfather" for his pioneering chatbot work.[1][2]

Career
[edit]In the mid-1990s, Hoffer worked on bringing Yellow Pages and White Pages directories online. In 1997, his company Typo.net drew attention for pioneering interstitial advertising.[1]
In January 2000, Hoffer co-founded ActiveBuddy with Timothy Kay and Peter Levitan.[2] Kay and Hoffer brainstormed the idea of building a chatbot for instant-messaging platforms; Kay then wrote the prototype bot in two weeks, while Hoffer raised the company's investment funding.[2] ActiveBuddy's chatbot SmarterChild launched in 2001 on AOL Instant Messenger and other platforms,[3] and over its lifetime attracted more than 30 million "buddies" across AIM, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger.[4] ActiveBuddy was later renamed Colloquis, and in October 2006 Microsoft acquired the company.[5]
Hoffer opened VentureBeat's MobileBeat 2016 conference with a keynote arguing that successful bots need personality,[4] and wrote guest columns for VentureBeat on chatbot design.[6][7] In 2025, the Computer History Museum featured SmarterChild in its exhibition Chatbots Decoded: Exploring AI.[3]
In 2023, Hoffer joined GlobalComix, a subscription digital comics distribution platform, as a co-founder, in conjunction with the company's $6.5 million Series A funding round led by Point72 Ventures.[8][9] In March 2026, GlobalComix announced a $13 million funding round co-led by Point72 Ventures and SBI U.S. Gateway Fund and the acquisition of AI-assisted comics localization company INKR.[10]
