Notability under creative-professional criterion

[edit]

I have disclosed my conflict of interest on my user page and have substantially rewritten the draft using institutional sources. Nelson's works are documented in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, North Carolina Museum of Art, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Blanton Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Rourke Art Gallery + Museum. He also participated in the Museum of Modern Art's 1962 exhibition Recent Painting U.S.A.: The Figure. These records appear relevant to the creative-professional criterion at WP:ARTIST, particularly the criterion concerning representation in the permanent collections of several notable museums. I welcome an independent review of the revised sourcing and draft. Karen Anderer (talk) 19:30, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Add Smithsonian American Art Museum

[edit]

I represent Robert A. Nelson’s work through my gallery and am therefore disclosing a conflict of interest.

Please add the following sentence to the section discussing museum collections:

“Nelson’s work is held in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.”[1]

The Smithsonian’s official artist record identifies him as Robert A. Nelson, also known as Robert Allen Nelson, and documents works by him in the museum’s collection.

Add Museum of Modern Art Collection

[edit]

I represent Robert A. Nelson’s work through my gallery and am disclosing a conflict of interest.

Please add that Nelson is represented in the Museum of Modern Art’s collection by three lithographs: Halleyville, Brooke Watson II, and Colfax. MoMA’s official collection dataset lists them under Robert A. Nelson, constituent ID 4259, with accession numbers 1474.1967, 1475.1967, and 1476.1967. All three are credited as gifts of Kleiner, Bell & Co.

Add Fifty Artists from Fifty States Exhibition

[edit]

I represent Robert A. Nelson’s work through my gallery and am disclosing a conflict of interest.

Please add the following sentence to Nelson’s exhibition history:

“Nelson’s work Gettysburg Horses was included in the American Federation of Arts traveling exhibition Fifty Artists from Fifty States, which circulated from March 1966 through May 1967.”

I possess the original American Federation of Arts exhibition label, which documents:

Artist: Robert A. Nelson Title: Gettysburg Horses Catalog number: 34 Exhibition: Fifty Artists from Fifty States Exhibition number: 66-15 Circulation dates: March 1966–May 1967 Organizer: The American Federation of Arts, 41 East 65th Street, New York

Nelson’s participation is also documented by the Gallery at Pennsylvania College of Technology: https://www.artworkarchive.com/profile/the-gallery-at-penn-college/artist/robert-a-nelson

A photograph of the original AFA label can be provided for verification if requested.

Add three verified museum collections

[edit]

I represent Robert A. Nelson's work through my gallery and am therefore disclosing a conflict of interest.

Please add the following verified institutional holdings to the museum collections section:

  • The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art lists two 1979 lithographs by Nelson, Field Piece and Candy Crow, in its online collection records.[1]
  • The Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin–Madison holds Nelson's 1980 lithograph and collage Electric Duck–Stuck-Up, accession number 1998.7.3.[2]
  • The Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign received Nelson's 1976 watercolor drawing Fish Unplugged as a gift from Rachel and Allen S. Weller.[3]

These sources are published directly by the respective museums or universities.
