Puerto Rico

This redirect says "River Plate" can refer to Rio de la Plata (Puerto Rico), a small river in Puerto Rico. Is the stream in P.R. really called "River Plate" sometimes? Can anyone provide a reference for this? Jonathunder 17:58, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

As far as I'm aware, noöne has ever called the pran river "River Plate". My supposition, without looking at the history, is that the error crept in during the recent naming dispute. Tomer^talk 22:28, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Now the words "...or its Spanish equivalent Río de la Plata can refer to..." have been added and that phrase would indeed include Rio de la Plata, P.R. Jonathunder 00:18, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, I don't think we need the Rio de la Plata redirects to link to here. Is the football team ever called "Rio de la Plata"? Is the Battle of the River Plate ever called the Battle of the Rio de la Plata (certainly the film is not)? -- ALoan (Talk) 10:20, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Spanish

I might be off on this one, but I think the use of the word plata in Spanish place-names usually is properly translated to silver, and not plate. Also, if it's a place-name, and known locally only by its Spanish name, should it really be translated? Do we translate Champs Elysee to Fields of Elysium for the English Wiki, or Vermont to Green Mountain (montaña verde) for the benefit of the Spanish Wiki? - Eric 15:55, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

(i) "River Plate" has been used as the English name of this river (at least in Britain) since the 1580s, and still is the most common name for the river in the UK (probably due to the Battle of the River Plate). (ii) "Plate" is an archaic English term for for "silver". (iii) This subject has been discussed at length in Talk:Río de la Plata/name, which is why the article on the river is under the Spanish name rather than here. In any event, "River Plate" needs to point to the article on the river, for the sake of readers from the UK; however, we also need to make sure that people looking for the football team (apparently named after the British-English name for the river, as displayed on packing cases arriving at a port on the estuary) can find it.

Having said that, I think the reference to the river in Puerto Rico is a red herring and should be deleted (see above). -- ALoan (Talk) 16:20, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
