Ring Current Misconception
[edit]The diagram and description here perpetuate a misconception that the ring current flows around the earth at the equator. In fact, at the equator, the ring current closed on itself at a lower altitude, forming two areas of ring current - a larger one on the day side and a smaller on on the night side, rather like this diagram http://www.igpp.ucla.edu/public/THEMIS/SCI/Pubs/Nuggets/PS_ring_current/Fig-1.jpg.
