I am well aware of the commonly used verbal shorthand applied to someone who has participated in a Stanley Cup winning playoff round. In fact, I've held a Stanley Cup ring in my hand; Colin Patterson (of the Calgary Flames) was a VP at our trust company and brought his on on occasion when requested for us to drool over. However, Wikipedia is not written for sports fans, it is a general interest encyclopedia. Use of sports terminology, catchprases and verbal shorthand should be avoided, as per the Manual of Style. Indicating that Riley "won the Stanley Cup" gives the mistaken impression to a layman that he performed some individual feat, or that his conduct was somehow responsible for the team's victory. This should be avoided. There is no harm in rewording it to indicate that he played on a Stanley Cup winning team, rather than "he won" the Stanley Cup, other than to perpetuate "jock talk" that is inappropriate to an encyclopedia. There is a disturbing tendency in sports articles on Wikepedia to do that. At least there isn't a play-by-play, suspense-filled account of the final game of the series here, which also seems par for the course...(oops - looks like I just did it too with my golf metaphor.
