The inevitable extra was identified as Piet Botha, a Boer commandant slain in the South African War. The picture became a cause célèbre in 1909, when Stead published an article claiming the photo must be of supernatural origin on the grounds that Piet Botha had been unknown in England. Skeptics J. N. Maskelyne and Andrew Wilson proved that a notice of Botha's death early in the war had in fact made London newspapers in 1899, three years before the photo was made; one had even published Botha's picture."
