Who paid for it? And what did it cost?

[edit]

I read somewhere (forgot where) that rather well-off citizens of Cape Town (of British origin, I suppose...) paid in a kind of crowdfunding project for the building project. I kind of doubt that from a gut feeling, as Rhodes had such an enormous amount of wealth there should have been enough for funding it after his death. Does anybody have reliable information on this question? Further, it would be interesting what the costs were - even though the material was supposedly cut off somewhere from table mountain, the five or so years of qualified labour (of a larger group of Italian builders) and the eight large bronze lions, the statue "Physical Energy", etc. must have cost a fortune, regardless if in the currency of 1912 or in the one of today. Would be interesting to have at least the amount in the currency of 1912 in the article. Any info on the above issues welcome. Pittigrilli (talk) 11:08, 15 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
