Origin of pseudo-RDT protocols

There seems to be a ubiquitous "RDT" protocol described by many sources and textbooks, with details that are remarkably consistent between sources, yet I've been unable to find the origin of it. I remember this causing a lot of confusion for me when I was studying in university. The previous version of this article seemed to reflect this theoretical protocol, so I've edited it to provide some clarification.

Unfortunately I no longer have the textbook I first read about it in, and I do not have access to the materials referenced by the sources previously cited in this article. I've also had no success finding any early versions of it by searching online. I've posted a stack exchange thread to see if anyone out there happens to know. I'd love to get to the bottom of this!
