Initial comments

• From a quick view, the article does not look like it is a long way from the GA criteria.
• The nominator is a major contributor to the article.
• There is unlikely any copyright violation in the article. Earwig's Copyvio Detector has reported only 1.0% in similarity.

• Checking whether the prose, spelling, and grammar are good.
  • I've made some minor improvements to the grammar. See Special:Diff/1279277902 and following edits.
  • Conception and design:
    • while tube dress – This most likely is a typo. Was it meant to say white?
      • Fixed.
  • Appearances:
    • Reiko Nagase could be shortened just to Reiko
      • Fixed.
    • She would return → She returned
      • Fixed.
  • Critical reception:
    • This section has some parts that could be rewritten, particularly those with quotations. This includes sentences with: "wholesome sexiness", "presence and style", "a touch of personality and charm", "reward"
      • Fixed. I did leave "wholesome sexiness" as a quote, as the "wholesome" part could be considered OR without attributing it to the author directly in this manner.
• Checking whether the article complies with MOS.
  • "Conception and design" could be shortened to "Concept and design" per MOS:VG. Same goes for "Critical reception" to "Reception".
    • While I recognize the MOS guideline, it is a bit outdated as for well over a hundred articles now we've been using the more thorough text including for quite a few at GA and FA levels. I would argue too conception is the better wording here as its describing how the character came about and not so much just the concept of the character in question.
  • E3 is wikilinked twice in Promotion and merchandise. Remove the second wikilink.
    • Fixed.
  • The article complies with the MOS:LEDE, MOS:LAYOUT, MOS:WTW, and MOS:WAF guidelines. There are no embedded lists within the article, so I am skipping MOS:EMBED. Overall, the lede's length is okay, it summarises the article, which does not have biased words within it.

      • Inside/Inside Games is a major Japanese gaming website considered reliable by the Japanese end of wikipedia and I've used it on multiple articles here, particularly Final Fantasy and Pokemon character articles.
      • Incite Video Gaming, Australian Station, and New Zealand Station are all published and corporate owned gaming magazines, and are cited with their respective ISSNs
      • Loading is a Spanish magazine published by Ares Informática which published other gaming magazines as well within the country, and the magazine itself lists full staff and positions. It is used here to cite the existence of the commercials.

Rave Racer girl is not Reiko

I could've sworn I edited this back in 22 or 21 before I made an account but there's no record of it. Anyway my reason for saying so is that in Ridge Racers 2 for the PSP, it is said that the girl in Rave Racer is unnamed. Plus to claim that she is Reiko is a stretch since her eyes are blue, her body looks different etc. I can't really be bothered to edit it back now and chances are it'll get changed again in the future so I'm setting this stone here. I took a look at the source, the claim seems to be an assumption from the author and he's unaffiliated with the dev team. My source comes from official material and with my points I think makes more sense. SK9ty1 (talk) 01:59, 3 May 2025 (UTC)

I was a bit hasty on reading that, I see that Yozo Sakagami spoke on the matter. While that complicates things I'd still contest such a thing as we have two official sources of such conflicting information. Not to mention he was not on the development team of Rave Racer so it's possible this was a generalization or case of forgetfulness on his part, but that's not my place to say. Also Ridge Racers 2 goes out of it's way to claim that they attempted to look for her name but couldn't find any, so their answer seems more confident. SK9ty1 (talk) 02:08, 3 May 2025 (UTC)

The thing is Retro Gamer, the folks behind the book, are generally seen as some of the best to cite for articles as they do tend to fact check well. While I get some information can get muddled along the way (and it doesn't help that we have two very similarly sounding game names here), we have to cite what the sources are saying. Perhaps possibly adding some mention one source claims she was made for Rage Racer first, but that feels unnecessary.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 02:24, 3 May 2025 (UTC)

I feel like given you were hesitant with showing this, you get that this isn't a particularly strong source. I also don't feel this needs to be nitpicked this hard SK9ty1: we sources saying in plain text she was an unnamed character in one game (which doesn't dispute what the PSP game is saying), and given a name and expanded role in the sequel.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 11:32, 3 May 2025 (UTC)

The part I take issue is with is "given a name and expanded role in the sequel", since well. it's contentious, and also possibly likely in accordance to Sakagami's quote. I nitpick this hard since as a fan of the series I've seen way too many people mistake other race queens in this series as Reiko, and given the edit history in this article, even before that bit came out that info was on this site, albeit without citation. This is no exception and I don't find the evidence very substantiating given my reasoning. I wasn't really hesitant to put forward my source, I said it from the beginning. I was more lazy with grabbing the screenshot and quote from my PSP since I thought my claims would be taken at face value until a consensus was made where I had to show it. I mean would you take the word of an official game release that was QAd and checked my multiple official staff over that sort of quote in the way it happened knowing it conflicts with that prior source? SK9ty1, I understand being a fan of the series but even you admit this is a nitpick, and yes I'd rather trust a secondary source on this matter. Even the screenshot doesn't contradict much: by that point she was still unnamed. I could see an argument to change it to say "given a name and expanded role in later installments in the franchise, particularly R4: Ridge Racer Type 4." I feel this allows for a smoother read, and some leeway with both sources. But as far as official sourcing we have on hand goes, the Rave Racer incarnation became her and we do have to stick with that as a point of origin.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 20:19, 3 May 2025 (UTC)

It's a bit better, but even if you wanted to believe it there's no explaining the radical change in design. The girl in Rave Racer couldn't pass as Reiko since she looks totally different aside from her hair and skin colour which is also about half my reasoning and gives more credence to Ridge Racers 2 take on things. You can be technical and say it was never said she wasn't turned into Reiko but in the quote from the game I think it can clearly be gleamed that they would've mentioned this if they saw it true. Alright, if you want to stick with facts then Ridge Racers 2 states:

"This is the opening movie of the game Rage Racer, released in 1996. This is the first time the CG character Reiko Nagase made an appearance."

Sorry to dig this up.

Whether Reiko was introduced in Rave Racer or not, the information presented across different pages for the Ridge Racer series sits as it is as conflicting.

The Rage Racer page makes the claim that the opening cinematic features the first appearance of Reiko and the page for the series as a whole also makes that claim.

The Rave Racer page makes no such claim despite Reiko's page stating that her first appearance is in Rave Racer.

If a decision has been decided upon in regards to her first appearance it would be nice if edits could be made across the different pages to bring them in line with each other.

They were referring to this live stream done last month on YouTube including the majority of the original developers of Rave Racer to celebrate it's 30th anniversary and release to arcade archives 2, it's only in Japanese though. The citation itself makes little sense with google translate but with deepl everything checks out with what I've put forward thus far.
