When Prentice first decided to abandon the Labour Party, he applied to join the Liberal Party. Both David Steel (in Westminster) and myself (as Chair of Newham Liberals at the time) turned him down flat. as his views were entirely consistent with the Conservatives. He remains the highest-ranking Labour figure ever to defect to the Conservative party.
