Conversion of compensation amount to current terms please

[edit]

"The Turkish government paid 4,000 Turkish lira (TL) in compensation...". This is meaningless without conversion to modern currency e.g. US$ equivalent today. Rcbutcher (talk) 06:22, 3 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

I agree. In 1940s $1 was equal to 1.11 TL. But this is not very informative . We should also know the devaluation of US$ in the last 70 years. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 12:03, 3 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Do you have a reference for that conversion rate in 1940 ? I converted 4000 TL to $3604. I then used an online calculator that gives $60,000 today. That's about a year's salary for a midranking naval officer today. How much did a midranking Turkish naval officer earn in 1941 ? Rcbutcher (talk) 13:06, 3 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
I don't know much about monetary politics. But you should realize that in 1940s exchange rates were under government control. Maybe in the free market the rate would be different. Anyway I don't know the salary of a seaman in 1945. But the highest civil servant salary was about 550 TL. Thus 4000 TL was not unbelievable. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 18:41, 3 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
550 TL - is that per month ? I think the way to explain the numbers is to say how they related to the sailors and officer's salary e.g. if we can say how much ordinary seamen and officers and soldiers and officers were paid in comparison. Rcbutcher (talk) 00:07, 4 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
