[edit]A transformer + rectifier does not produce dc, it produces rectified ac. They are not the same, despite being commonly confused.

[edit]Tabby, a rectiformer is used in electrical power feeds for process industries - this is not an electronics component. For example, rectiformers are used to take high voltage ac lines to create dc voltages for Hall process cells in the Aluminium smelting industry. In that case, voltage across the cell may be only 4.5 Volts but the current might be many tends of thousands of amps (one in my experience was 132,000 and yours keys would stand up in the magnetic fields if you held them in your hand).
