At his Montreal apartment in the fall of 1995 (my memory of the exact date is uncertain) I spoke with Raymond Klibansky about Plato's influence on Chaucer and how it came about through the poet's intermediary reading of Cicero. About the transmission of Platonic influence Klibansky was the expert. While discussing the house of rumor in Chaucer's House of Fame, Klibansky mentioned that he could offer an example of how rumor worked in real life by his own experience: people assumed that he was Jewish because of his association with the Warburg Institute and his departure from Germany to avoid Hitler. I offer this anecdote, not for inclusion in the article, but to suggest that you really should check the facts. RW
