A.H. Joy discovery date possibly incorrect
[edit]The current version of the article mentions that A.H. Joy discovered the ring around the smaller star in 1947, but I found a mention of it in a copy of Astounding magazine v29n05 from July 1942 in an article entitled "Stars Also Have Rings" by R. S. Richardson on page 78 of that issue.
The article, being in a popular science fiction magazine of the day, is short on science and long on description of the effect and how it was discovered by observing the spectroscopic nature of the system during an eclipse.
Full text of the magazine can be found here: https://ia801202.us.archive.org/6/items/Astounding_v29n05_1942-07_dtsg0318/Astounding_v29n05_1942-07_dtsg0318.pdf A textual description of the phenomenon is on page 78 and a set of diagrams providing a visual representation is on page 79.
The magazine article predates the reported discovery by five years. Jlp.78 (talk) 04:10, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
- This paper by Joy puts concept of the rings back to at least February, 1942. Praemonitus (talk) 05:57, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
