Assisted suicide (also called medical aid in dying (MAID), assisted dying, or physician-assisted suicide (PAS)) describes the process by which a person, with the help of others, takes drugs to end their life.
This medical practice is an end-of-life measure for a person suffering a painful, terminal illness. Once it is determined that the person's situation qualifies under the laws for that location, the physician's assistance is usually limited to writing a prescription for a lethal dose of drugs. This practice falls under the concept of the medical right to die.
Assisted suicide is legal in some countries, under certain circumstances, including Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, parts of the United States and all six states in Australia.
