Notability

Unclear that organization meets WP:ORG. Sources seem to be either not independent or WP:ROUTINE. Merge to Furman University may be appropriate. Jahaza (talk) 03:41, 23 January 2026 (UTC)

I'm comfortable with Notability. I think the 100th coverage (once added) is not routine.

Thanks for adding coverage of their 100th anniversary milestone. It is clear that the QSO article HAS sufficient external sourcing to meet Wikipedia's bar. What I am NOT clear on is why the section of the Furman University article, denoting student activities, was severely, aggressively blanked, leaving only a summary of sports activities. Student activities and clubs, some of them existing for over 100 years have impacted 40%, 50% or more of collegians. This would be two or three times the number of student athletes which typically top out at 15%, if that. Both types of activity are valuable; such tedious, excessive pruning of content to reduce these articles to "summaries of summaries" makes them useless. We have the space on Wikipedia's servers. This is harmful "Deletionism". Deletionism is a holdover from a time when printing paper was costly and limited. Members and former members of these organizations benefit from our noting their presence and calling out further avenues of research (references), and in our balanced way, allowing articles and paragraphs. These connections are noted on resumes, member biographies and ancestral studies - areas of inquiry or research that continually broaden. Let it be: See Inclusionism. The 100th anniversary coverage may not be routine, but since it's from Furman Magazine it's not independent. It needs to be both. Jahaza (talk) 20:53, 23 January 2026 (UTC)

That magazine is not a blue-chip source, like the few nationally recognized newspapers of record, but now that notability is assured we can take loads of color comment to fill out articles from next-level sources. The administrative body at the school, and this Furman newspaper are indeed independent of that particular society. To deny that is a common mistake:. One doesn't own the other, or benefit financially in any meaningful way. Over the past century, perhaps a QSO member has been later named to the faculty or admin, or has briefly served on the newspaper. Jax MN (talk) 23:08, 23 January 2026 (UTC)

@Jax MN: Hopefully, my small restoration to the Furman student activity section will survive. I did include on this group but have no expectation that added details will survive. Since this organiztion does not fit Collegiate secret societies in North America (when it was originally discussed) and List of senior societies is still just a list, I don't see any other options. The sources from Furman are reliable and significant, but aren't the only sources to meet notability if their independence is questioned. There are more than 3,000 articles in Newspapers.com that are potential sources. This shows a pattern of coverage over more than 100 years, including in non-local publications, which can be used to determine notability of an organization. Some of these 3,000+ articles are indeed routine coverage regarding new members. However, enough provide significant coverage to meet notability. Rublamb (talk) 00:31, 24 January 2026 (UTC)
