History

Founding and early development

The founding story dates back to 2010, when Florian Seibel, Michael Kriegel and Tobias Kloss worked as research assistants at the Bundeswehr University Munich, participating in the creation of an aircraft combining the vertical take-off of a multicopter with the cruise efficiency of a wing .

The company was founded in 2015 by Seibel with Kriegel, Kloss and Armin Busse . The founders described the company as specialising in the development and production of unmanned transition aircraft for civil applications, and saw themselves as the technical heirs of these aircraft . It grew without external investors .

By 2016 it employed a team of 20 at the ASTO Park campus in Oberpfaffenhofen, a high-technology site developed on Friedrichshafener Straße roughly ten years after Fairchild-Dornier’s 2002 insolvency .

In 2017 the company took first place in the Münchener Businessplan Wettbewerb . Early that year it said its roadmap ran to a market entry in October at InterGEO in Berlin, its main product then being the TRON, a vertical take-off unmanned fixed-wing aircraft with a 3.5-meter wingspan . It had left multicopters behind, Seibel said: “For me it was always clear that staying in the copter business would become a fight ‘David against Goliath’.” The team then numbered 40 .

Growth and international expansion

A 2020 partnership with Auterion Government Solutions linked its Scorpion tricopter to the Vector: fixed wings and a tail segment can be incorporated into the Scorpion to convert it into the Vector, a fixed-wing vertical take-off and landing aircraft for longer-range missions .

A US subsidiary in California, announced in November 2021, took effect on 1 January 2022 under Dave Sharpin as chief executive officer, targeting Special Operations Forces and Customs and Border Protection; Seibel called it “a logical next step for Quantum Systems to grow as a global sUAS provider, attracting the best talent and moving closer to our biggest customers” .

The company shifted to dual-use drones with military applications by 2019; by mid-2024, the company had 320 employees and was profitable, according to Seibel. PitchBook data cited by Sifted gave total funding of $128 million . Seibel has described its growth logic as sequential: “At one point you win the first programme of record, and then it’s easier to win the next and the next and the next” .

Acquisitions and joint ventures

In March 2025, Quantum Systems acquired AirRobot of Arnsberg, which had supplied the Bundeswehr’s MIKADO drones since 2008 and was principal supplier to the MIKADO II programme running to 2032 through a maintenance contract, but had been in economic difficulty for years and could not fund the necessary modernisation. Development, production and maintenance were to remain in Arnsberg. . A company spokesperson said the aim was to secure the Bundeswehr’s supply of critical capabilities, and Seibel had recently described the company as a champion for European drone production .

Sifted also lists the purchase of the British drone provider Nordic Unmanned UK . In October 2025, the company bought the Thuringian AI specialist Spleenlab, the first completed deal in a planned programme of acquisitions, for a sum an insider put to Handelsblatt at a mid-double-digit million euros. The company declined to comment on the price . Its group page also lists AirRobot GmbH & Co. KG, founded in 2005 and an official Bundeswehr supplier from 2008, Weles Acoustics, which builds particle velocity sensors for vibro-acoustic measurement, and EFT Mobility, which develops ready-to-install electric and hybrid-electric drivetrains and their sub-components .

In December 2025, at the 8th German-Ukrainian Economic Forum in Berlin, the company announced Quantum Frontline Industries, a joint venture with the Ukrainian manufacturer Frontline Robotics. Co-CEO Sven Kruck said the partners would “create Europe’s first foreign production capacity at this scale for Ukraine”, and Frontline Robotics chief executive Yevhen Tretiak described it as “the first Ukrainian-German defence joint venture” .

Quantum Systems Group is a European drone, software and AI company based in Gilching, Bavaria . The company describes itself as building “advanced autonomous systems for defense and security operations across multiple domains, powered by integrated software and AI” , with its aircraft carrying out reconnaissance and surveillance with artificial-intelligence assistance .

Its aerial portfolio includes Trinity Pro, Trinity Tactical, as well as the Twister, Vector AI and Reliant ISR platforms, covering short-, mid- and long-range missions. The portfolio also includes the multi-mission PULSE P19 aircraft.

Products and technology

The company began with civil transition aircraft for surveying and agriculture , marketed for tasks including cartography, 3D reconstruction and industrial-plant inspection , adding military applications from 2019 .

Its range has since widened beyond aircraft to ground vehicles , a rocket-boosted interceptor , a weapons-capable MALE-class aircraft and the MOSAIC UXS software common to several .

Its aircraft are transition designs, taking off vertically and cruising on wings . The Vector followed in 2019, launched together with the Scorpion and presented with ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH as a “two-in-one system” built around a centrepiece common to both configurations, which carries the sensor gimbal, the autopilot and the datalink . The Vector converts into the Scorpion multicopter by exchanging its fixed wing and tail assembly for a boom-and-rotor arrangement, and the system can be operational within three minutes .

The Netherlands procured Vector in 2022 at a maximum take-off weight of 7.4 kg and a flight time of up to two hours . It serves German special forces as FALKE, which BAAINBw called optimised for their operational spectrum, credited with up to 30 km and up to three hours . By 2026, as Vector AI, it had a maximum take-off weight of 9.5 kg, up to 180 minutes of endurance and a command-and-control range exceeding 60 km .

Vector AI reconnaissance sUAS

The backpack-portable Twister has a maximum take-off weight of 4 kg and flies for 90 minutes, analysing scenes and classifying targets autonomously onboard. The company says it remains fully functional in GNSS-denied and electronically contested environments .

Reliant spans 4.3 m and is 2.38 m long, at a maximum take-off weight of 25–33 kg including its 3 kg payload, flying seven hours on lithium-polymer batteries or over ten on a hybrid-electric powertrain, with a long-range tracking antenna passing control and video beyond 160 km. Hartpunkt, citing a LinkedIn post, reports a carrier variant with one mounting point per wing under development for the US market, the mounting points not currently planned for the European variant .

Sparta, a catapult-launched carrier developed to meet the requirements of the Ukrainian battlefield, weighs 8 kg with a 23 kg maximum take-off weight and was reported near serial production in 2025 .

Counter-drone and armed systems

Skyron-400, originally designated Jäger, is a rocket-boosted interceptor with a maximum speed of 380 km/h, a cruise speed of 200 km/h and a tactical radius of up to 50 km. A first order worth €30 million came in 2026 from a customer the company would not name, the figure given in a LinkedIn post by Seibel .

The PULSE P19 is an optionally remotely piloted MALE-class aircraft with an endurance of more than 18 hours and at least six payload attachment points on the wings. In June 2026, Quantum Systems announced plans to present the aircraft at ILA 2026. hartpunkt stated the company was apparently moving into “combat drone construction”. Its roles include airborne counter-drone work, precision strike, maritime surveillance and reconnaissance .

Land domain

The Mandrill, an uncrewed ground vehicle, is listed by its maker at a vehicle weight of 1,190 kg carrying over 750 kg, a maximum of 100 km/h and up to 200 km of electric range , alongside the MOSAIC Ground autonomous kit it lists . In March 2026, Quantum Systems and Daimler Truck announced a partnership at LogNet2026, combining Quantum Systems’ autonomy and teleoperation expertise with the Daimler Truck manufacturing capacity and vehicle platform. MOSAIC UXS is built as a platform-agnostic system, meaning it can be fitted to different fleets and various manufacturers .

Software and autonomy

MOSAIC UXS is the common software backbone, named in published specifications for the Twister , Skyron-400 , PULSE P19 and Mandrill . Olexandr Berezhnyi, Managing Director in Ukraine, described the aim as “a single control panel that allows simultaneous monitoring and management of all system elements”. Militarnyi reported that the platform has the potential to be integrated with positioning, battle management and situational-awareness systems such as Ukraine’s Delta .

The Receptor AI upgrade was described by the company as enabling “optical navigation during the day and at night and in poor visibility conditions”, plus automated AI-supported object recognition and identification. It runs on an NVIDIA Jetson Orin with the Raptor gimbal, and software engineering director Daniel Kneifel said it was being implemented “without any weight changes and with the same range” .

In the Bundeswehr’s KITU 2 programme, seven AI-controlled aircraft, including the company’s Vector and Scorpion plus two Airbus multi-purpose drones, flew under GPS-denied conditions in a demonstration at the Airbus Drone Center near Manching in early August, with the demonstration reported in September . On August 24, 2026, the US branch Quantum-Systems Inc. announced a new 3,200-square-foot office in Huntsville, Alabama . There are also operations in Germany, Australia, Ukraine, Romania and the United Kingdom . Quantum Frontline Industries operates from an undisclosed site in southern Germany with over 100 employees and planned initial output of 10,000 drones a year .

Ukrainska Pravda, citing reporting by Politico, gave figures of around 80 Vector drones built each month in Ukraine and about 120 a month in Germany .

For the Twister programme, the company said it could deliver at least 250 systems a year . In September 2025, Seibel put the workforce at roughly 700 across the office in Los Angeles, Australia and the headquarters in Germany, with about 200 more people supporting the company's Ukraine operations . By August 2026, Quantum Systems vice-president Matthias Lehna said it employed more than 600 people in Ukraine . Earlier counts were 20 in 2016 , 40 in 2018 and 320 by mid-2024 . Seibel told Sifted that revenue for 2024 was €115 million . Ukraine ordered an undisclosed number of Vectors in August 2022, financed from a German “security capacity building” fund . By the company’s own account, three orders followed in succession, of 33, 105 and 300 systems, in August 2022, January 2023 and May 2023 .

The Kyiv Independent reported in April 2024 that the German government had provided 212 sUAS , and the federal government’s list recorded 619 Vectors with spare parts delivered as of April 2025, with a further 316 in planning or execution . Ukraine procured more than 400 Vector systems in the two years to July 2024 .

In January 2024, the company donated 100 Trinity aircraft in various configurations, free of charge and with operator training, under a contract signed by Seibel with Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko in September 2023 .

Operational role

The drones are being deployed in cooperation with the command of Ukraine’s Rocket and Artillery Forces, and a new version of the Vector carries an acoustic sensor that detects enemy artillery positions by sound at long range .

Dave Sharpin said one Vector “was at a very extended range… when it was struck 11 times by small arms fire” and that it carried on working until its “gimbal [stabilizer] took a direct hit”, adding that Vectors “have flown thousands of combat mission hours in Ukraine under the toughest of conditions” .

Production and cooperation

A service, support, training and logistics facility opened in Ukraine, announced in May 2023 , followed on 18 April 2024 by a factory and development hub, the second Ukrainian facility, with capacity for up to 1,000 drones a year including spare parts, possibly around 100 staff by the year’s end and investment of up to €6 million in new production over two years .

Manufacturing is dispersed across undisclosed sites in several regions of Ukraine to reduce exposure to Russian missile strikes . Seibel reported a Ukrainian workforce of around 200 in September 2025 , while by August 2026, Matthias Lehna reported that the workforce had grown to more than 600 . The company runs a research and maintenance operation in Ukraine, and has moved beyond assembly of important parts: by May 2025 it reported full local production of all Vector fuselage components, alongside localised assembly of complete aircraft and its MOSAIC UXS software is reported as being integrated with the Delta situational-awareness system .

Quantum Frontline Industries

In December 2025, the company announced Quantum Frontline Industries, a joint venture with Frontline Robotics to produce drones in Germany. The venture is led by Matthias Lehna, Quantum Systems’ Director of Government Relations and Business Development. Quantum Systems contributes its industrial base and manufacturing capabilities, while Frontline Robotics provides licensed designs, training and lifecycle support in line with NATO standards.

Co-CEO Sven Kruck called it “the logical next step of our proven track record in support of Ukraine” . Boris Pistorius and Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the site on 13 February 2026 under the German government’s “Build with Ukraine” programme . Pistorius thanked the two companies for having implemented the project at the speed of light, some four months after the October 2025 memorandum of understanding signed within the Ukraine Contact Group .

In April 2026, Quantum Systems announced the founding of two more joint ventures under the initiative “Build with Ukraine”, namely Quantum WIY Industries (QWI) with WIY drones for air defence, and Quantum Tencore Industries (QTI) with Tencore, which will focus on unmanned ground vehicles. FALKE was described in November 2020 by parliamentary state secretary Thomas Silberhorn, answering a question in the Bundestag, as a rapidly deployable unmanned system for precise airborne reconnaissance in the optically visible and infrared range over distances of up to 30 kilometres .

BAAINBw awarded the contract on 26 September 2023 for 14 unmanned aircraft systems of the market-available type “Vector VTOL”, for the Bundeswehr’s special forces, with deliveries from the fourth quarter of 2024 and no published value. The losing bidders were Elbit Systems Deutschland with a variant of its Skylark, Rheinmetall Technical Publications with AeroVironment’s Puma 3 AE, and Dynamit Nobel Defence Digital with the Orbiter 2 .

In mid-December 2025, the Budget Committee was to consider releasing slightly more than €200 million for over 500 further FALKE systems, extending the system beyond special forces to the combat troops and the Feldjäger military police, with a small number in a maritime fitting for port facilities and critical maritime infrastructure .

A separate programme covers the Twister, tendered as a framework for up to 747 drones, of which 147 systems were to be firmly ordered at about €16 million with up to 600 more held as options at a further €70 million, against a headline ceiling of €85 million. The systems must be qualified by the Bundeswehr before entering service, and observers expect ALADIN cannot be replaced before 2027 .

Handelsblatt reported the figure around 750 reconnaissance drones and also said that ALADIN, the system being replaced, was originally built by EMT, a company that Rheinmetall agreed to take over in late 2021. The acquisition was finalised in early 2022 .

Quantum Systems is part of the consortium led by Airbus Defence and Space, which has been chosen for URANOS KI, alongside B&W International, as well as Helsing Germany with Alpine Eagle and ARX Robotics. Both consortiums have an estimated value of up to 136.2 million Euros.

Other governments

The Australian Defence Force signed two contracts worth AUD 90 million combined on 24 April 2024 under DEF129-SUAS, formerly Land 129 Phase 4B, with deliveries from April 2025 and support to 2031. Quantities were not disclosed . The Netherlands received a first tranche in 2022, delivered with the Dutch partner BSS Holland. Janes reported that the company would not give further information on the number of systems being delivered or the delivery timeframes .

In New Zealand, the company announced an agreement with the Ministry of Defence covering Vector systems, spare parts, training and through-life support. The order was received in September 2023, with deliveries beginning in 2024 . The Kyiv Post lists New Zealand among Vector operators .

Romania’s Compania Naţională Romtehnica concluded a contract on 14 May 2024 for 22 complete systems in the class the notice designates “Sistem Mini UAS clasa I – aripă fixă” (Mini UAS class I, fixed wing) at 91,703,348 RON over 36 months, on a single tender received. The notice does not name the platform . The company identifies it as the Vector, gives the value as about €18.4 million and dates the contract to 14 May 2024, running 36 months .

A second Romanian order followed under the EU SAFE programme, with deliveries scheduled for 2027. The order includes 15 Scorpion kits,which enable the fixed-wing aircraft to be converted into a multicopter configuration. The Defense Post reported 34 Vector drones valued at €30.7 million , while a ministry table lists 34 systems valued at €31.4 million, with assembly taking place entirely in Romania .

In April 2025, the Spanish Army awarded €27.4 million excluding VAT for 91 systems, each comprising two aircraft and a ground control station. Two tenders have since been awarded, covering deliveries of the Vector and Twister drone systems. The approved budget provides scope to expand the contract to around 150 systems in the future.

In February 2025, the U.S. Defense Innovation Unit selected Vector for inclusion in its Blue UAS framework, alongside 36 other systems and components. Its inclusion remained subject to cybersecurity verification. The selection was followed by demonstrations at Twentynine Palms in November 2024 . In April 2026, the US Army awarded a $15.3 million contract under its company-level sUAS Directed Requirement 2, supporting brigade combat teams and the Army’s future Medium Range Reconnaissance programme .

Commercial applications

The founders originally intended their drones for landscape surveying, agriculture and search and rescue . In 2017, the company presented a two-product civil line-up, Seibel saying the Trinity suited “customers who need a turnkey imaging solution that’s globally exportable, while the Tron carries larger, custom payloads for up to 120 minutes of flight on a single charge” . The company stated that monitoring tasks previously requiring up to three weeks with aircraft such as senseFly’s eBee could be completed in five hours . It also cited early projects with the Federal Police, Deutsche Bahn and RWE as examples of the technology’s advantages .

Trinity mapping eVTOL drone for commercial survey work

Those were rail maintenance work for the railway operator and change detection in coal production for the energy company, alongside its use of Esri software. The company had “been using Drone2Map a lot”, its Chief Financial Officer Armin Busse said .

For survey work, the Trinity F90+ was offered from 2021 with the Qube 240 lidar, quoted at 240,000 distance measurements per second and precision down to 1.8-2.5 cm, which cut endurance from 90 to 60 minutes . In a civil logistics trial in 2019, the South African National Blood Service adopted a Tron to carry at least four units of blood over more than 100 km, with rollout planned in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western and Eastern Cape. Its Chief Executive Jonathan Louw said, “We believe this will be a milestone in the history of blood transfusion, not only in South Africa, but in the entire world” .

In June 2022, it completed a $32 million Series A financing comprising equity and venture debt, with Bayern Kapital and the European Investment Bank among the participants. A €63.6 million Series B co-led by HV Capital and DTCP in October 2023 brought its total funding above €100 million. A further financing led by Notion Capital and Porsche SE in September 2024 brought the aggregate Series B volume above €100 million. In May 2025, a €160 million Series C led by Balderton Capital, its first defence investment, included Hensoldt and Airbus Defence and Space as strategic investors and valued Quantum Systems at more than €1 billion. A €180 million extension in November increased its valuation to more than €3 billion. t

In February 2026, Quantum Systems secured €150 million in long-term debt financing from the European Investment Bank, Commerzbank, Deutsche Bank and KfW, including a €70 million EIB loan. The EIB said the package reflected the growing availability of European capital for security-related technologies. In July 2026, the company raised $1.2 billion in a Series D round at a valuation of approximately $8 billion, more than double its previous valuation. The round was co-led by Airbus, Blackstone, Advent and Noteus, with Fidelity Management & Research Company, Wellington Management and A.P. Moller Holding among the other investors.
