Connecting using IE

I just tried the address http://ota.iambic.com:17/ in Internet Explorer (v 7.0) and it forwarded me to the main iambic site. Should this information be removed? Robferrer 11:51, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

For Internet Explorer 6.0 http://ota.iambic.com:17/ works. Firefox 2.0 and Opera 9.1 cannot handle this. Normally that does not make sense because the protocols don't match. The correct browser syntax would be "qotd://ota.iambic.com". It's just an interesting behaviour of IE6 that shows that this browser trys to handle all kind of data / communication even if it does not understand what's going on. ~ Steffen 13:13, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

I still have IE 6 (fully patched) on my computer and I cannot reproduce this result. Nor can I reproduce it by modifying Firefox to allow port 17. Nardman1 19:16, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

QOTD on Wikiquote

This article refers to the internet protocol as opposed to a general, quote of the day service. That isn't to say that wikiquote isn't similar, but it does not use the protocol as best I can tell.--CannedhamX (talk) 14:58, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Is this a Valid example?

The wikipage mentions, quotes4all.net (tcp, udp) - Serves the quotes of the site. Is this a valid example for QOTD or is it commercial site link added in the wikipedia article.(in which case, it is vandalism).

It is a valid example of a QOTD, if you run telnet quotes4all.net 17 via command line it will return a quote from the server. I'll change it to behave more like the link above it, providing a link to the HTTP site as well as a link to the telnet version, thus alleviating confusion.--CannedhamX (talk) 14:58, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

As of this writing (March 2011), quotes4all.net does not seem to be operating a quote service on port 17 (or if it is, then my ISP is blocking me). quotes4all.net currently resolves to 88.198.58.149. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.10.130.47 (talk) 17:05, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

I can get the quote service from alpha.mike-r.com as of today (Sept 2012). However, I am not certain if it is on port 17. It displays as "Apache/1.3.26 Server at alpha.mike-r.com Port 80", but that might be from my point-of-view, so to speak.

Also, I edited the article slightly to link to the single reference provided. That reference was the basis for the comment about the QOTD service no longer being ummm "well-regarded". Given the paucity of usage examples of QOTD operating as a quote service on port 17, it seems quite a reasonable claim! I acknowledge that my personal assessment of "reasonable" does not make for encyclopedic content; thus the citation of the afore-mentioned reference source. --FeralOink (talk) 08:05, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Issues with example QOTD servers

I just tried each of the example QOTD servers currently listed in the article and had issues with several. Can anyone confirm this? I'll plan to wait a while, try again, and remove them if they're still broken.

• telnet qotd.nngn.net 17 produces the following error

  Trying 54.94.251.104...
  telnet: connect to address 54.94.251.104: Connection refused
  telnet: Unable to connect to remote host

  There is a page online at http://nngn.net
• telnet qotd.atheistwisdom.com 17 produces the error "qotd.atheistwisdom.com: nodename nor servname provided, or not known". This could be temporary, as trying to view a webpage at http://atheistwisdom.com produces a "not found" error, but the page is cached by Google.
• While I don't think this is sufficient reason to remove the entry, I would also note that telnet djxmmx.net 17 produces buggy output at least some of the time, e.g.:

QOTD server included in stock Windows 7 desktop

My Win7 professional (not a windows server edition) includes TCPSVCS.EXE which serves the windows service simptcp:

telnet localhost 17
