Moved the below section here, since its become obsolete due to BRAC. There is an office in Fort Knox now that handles all the award determinations for the Army. Also, this appears to have been a strictly Army specific section, and was slightly misleading as this is not how USAF, USN, USMC, or USCG vets would go about getting a replacement PH Medal.

A Purple Heart may be issued to a fallen veteran's next of kin in the event that they are deceased. Issue will be made automatically by the Commanding General, PERSCOM, upon receiving a report of death indicating entitlement. For those who became Prisoners of War after 25 April 1962, the Purple Heart will be awarded to individuals wounded while prisoners of foreign forces, upon submission by the individual to the Department of the U.S. Army of an affidavit that is supported by a statement from a witness, if this is possible. Documentation and inquiries should be directed to Commander, PERSCOM, ATTN: TAPC-PDA, Alexandria, VA 22332-0471. Any member of the U.S. Army who believes that he or she is eligible for the Purple Heart, but through unusual circumstances no award was made, may submit an application through military channels, to Commander, PERSCOM, ATTN: TAPC PDA, Alexandria, VA 22332-0471. Application will include complete documentation, to include evidence of medical treatment, pertaining to the wound.

Notable Recipients addition

Unsure what to title this

Since the purple heart has bled over into the Law Enforcement world, should there be a link to forward to LE Purple hearts, or a short blurb about how LE/First Responders now have Purple Hearts based off similar criteria's that the military has, subsequently linking to that page?

Shouldn't the list of recipients of the Purple Heart be it's own article?

It's gotten to be a long, long list and this article should mainly be about what a Purple Heart is, no? I mean, most notable awards have an article on what the award is, and then an article with a list of notable people/groups/places etc. that have recieved it, right?
