Photo IDs

I'm concerned about the IDs in all of the photos we are using (including my own). this shows a horizontal brown segment just under the head, which is not seen in any of our pictures. --99of9 (talk) 10:37, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Right, starting with File:Black Prince Cicada 01.jpg - yours from Bawley Point. The only Psaltoda that occur there are the black prince, redeye and yellowbelly. Although the photo of the darker form is called nlack prince and has the brown band, the Moulds book says the darker forms can be completely black. I did a quick skim through all their pictures, our pics may match Redeye - especially check the infuscation on the wings. --99of9 (talk) 12:08, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Am reading about the heavy infuscation of the hind wings being a key distinguishing feature...just tricky as I can't quite see the hind wings clearly enough to make out. Have also read that a redeye's eyes can be brownish too. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 20:09, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Good news - Lindsay says all four photos are Psaltoda plaga as "Each example has a small infuscation in the forewing and no apparent infuscations in the hindwing, which is diagnostic (i.e. the hindwings are uniformly translucent, whereas in P. moerens the hind wing would be bordered with melanistic coloration)." Oh, great! I didn't notice this until now. I thought that infuscation might help, but hadn't been able to nail it down. Interesting about the hindwing. --99of9 (talk) 13:20, 30 August 2013 (UTC)
