"Attributed to"?

In another article, I needed to link to an article about artistic attribution. We don't have one. Would anyone care to write it? A subsection of this article might be enough? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 11:20, 14 September 2026 (UTC)

I agree such an article would be desirable (and I'm surprised there isn't one), but I really don't think a subsection of this article would work – there's minimal overlap between the two concepts. Attribution is an attempt (sometimes speculative) to identify the origins of an artwork or artefact; provenance strives to record its subsequent (post-creation) custodial history. A "See also" from this article would be justified, but not an entire subsection. GrindtXX (talk) 14:54, 15 September 2026 (UTC)

We do have a (dismbiguation) article Attribution, but visual art is conspicuous by its absence:

• Attribution (copyright), concept in copyright law requiring an author to be credited
• Attribution (journalism), the identification of the source of reported information
• Attribution (law), legal doctrines by which liability is extended to a defendant who did not actually commit the criminal act
• Attribution (marketing), concept in marketing of assigning a value to a marketing activity based on desired outcome
• Attribution (psychology), concept in psychology whereby people attribute traits and causes to things they observe
• Extreme event attribution, estimation of how climate change affects recent extreme weather events
• Performance attribution, technique in quantitative finance for explaining the active performance of a portfolio

The reason I thought Provenance to be a good nest for this cuckoo (!) is that tracing provenance is a major tool of attribution. But I can see your logic and thank you for considering it. Anyone else have access to relevant sources? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 15:27, 15 September 2026 (UTC)
