The source cited for "it is produced commercially by oxidizing at a lead electrode" doi:10.1002/14356007.a05_235 itself cites a patent held by BASF which says simple lead anodes "cannot technically prevail" for commercial oxidation of propiolic acid. [1]

Their invention uses composite lead dioxide / titanium anodes to allow for commercial production, reducing the need to frequently replace the electrodes and the ion-exchange membrane used as a diaphragm to separate them.

At this point we could just change "lead electrode" to "lead dioxide / titanium composite anode" in H2SO4 and leave it at that.

However, I found found a few more patents that suggest some real history to this process which I would like to explore.

The BASF patent builds upon prior art of one Dr. Viktor Ferdinand Wolf of the University of Hamburg who was a freelance research assistant when he applied for the original patent on the Electrosynthesis of Propiolic Acid. [2]

Another patent filed by Monsanto absolutely trashes Dr. Wolf's work saying it is "time consuming and complex." It's translated from German to add "and do not work without it further to a pure propiolic acid." It goes on to say "the propiolic acid can be produced easily and economically by reacting Monovinylacetylen in a liquid organic solvent with ozone at temperatures between about -75 and +100 0 C" [4]

I need to get back to my day job but I think there is a lot of good stuff here to add to Propiolic Acid and the Electrosynthesis article using the same reference. This Dr. Viktor Wolf has no wiki but I saw some potentially interesting other work he did involving tobacco snuff so he sounds like a fun dude. UrvUrm (talk) 18:22, 25 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
