Experimental Hip Hop

Agreed. Experimental hip hop is not the same as progressive hip hop. I was surprised at the redirect. HollowZephyr (talk) 11:30, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
Experimentalism is one of the defining aspects, as documented in the article. The redirect was previously to alternative hip hop. I changed it to this article because the other one was littered with issues, among them poor sourcing. Piotr Jr. (talk) 13:38, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

Concerns about scope and title
[edit]Hi all. I was reading this article and was surprised to see how thorough and detailed it was, considering that I almost never see the term "progressive rap" (or "progressive hip-hop") used in actual hip-hop discussion spaces. The article is gesturing at legitimate movements within hip-hop, I believe, but "progressive rap" simply is not a widely used term to describe them. (In my own experience, and as Ngrams corroborate, conscious rap and alternative hip-hop are much more common terms for this subgenre.) I've looked at some of the sources for this article, and a few of them (Pinn, for instance) do make the argument that there exists a distinct "progressive rap" genre. However, as we pass beyond the "Themes and characteristics" section to the rest of the article, I believe it comes to be increasingly dominated by WP:SYNTH, as sources that mention the phrases "progressive rap" or "progressive hip-hop" in passing are stitched together to try to argue for the existence of a subgenre specifically called progressive rap in a way that I feel the sources—taken collectively—don't actually justify.
My question is, then: what do we think is the best way forward here? An RM would be superficially helpful, but I don't think changing the title would be sufficient to deal with the SYNTH in the article body. Do we aggressively prune the SYNTH but leave the article in place? Do we merge with another related article like alternative hip-hop? Do we hold off on any action until there's a standalone conscious rap article to discuss this topic in a more robust fashion? I can see multiple viable options, so I'd love to hear from more parties before I commit to any of them. ModernDayTrilobite (talk • contribs) 18:34, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
