Lack of Coordination
[edit]The general area of professionalism seems to me to be unhelpfully split over several articles, including Professionalism, Profession, Professional Conduct, Professional, Professional Ethics, Professional Judgement and Professional Certification. While there is a lot of duplication, there are also gaps in some that are addressed by others. For instance, the response to uncertified persons working as if a professional is not mentioned in Professional Certification. There may also be some disagreements – concerning different professions, geographies and legislation traditions. How could they be better coordinated? DS0022 (talk) 10:57, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- The simplest way is to just merge all of the articles into one. Another possibility is to have this article be the main article on the subject of professionalism, while professional ethics and professional judgement are linked to from here, with a summary. --MtPenguinMonster (talk) 02:51, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Professional is someone who do a "Profession" for a living/as occupation, otherwise they are not "Professional", but "Amateur" (e.g. hobbyist).
Professionalism is not about behavior, looks, or dressing. However, the professionals might have to dress or look in a certain way. Professionalism doesn't mean you need to wear a suit. Professional boxers just wear shorts.
It is mostly being confused with Expertise, which is about being an Expert at doing something. Most of the Professionals are also Experts, though. However, you can be an Expert fisher without being a Professional one. You would naturally expect Expertise from a Professional.
Along with "Expertise", it is being confused with "all good things at once".
It doesn't mean efficient, effective, lean, six-sigma, black belt, beautiful, handsome, clever, strong, etc. "Professional behavior" also doesn't mean proper or correct behavior. In short, it is being confused with having such expected positive qualities. You would naturally expect all of the relevant qualities or behavior from a professional. However, in its essence, it only implies doing something for a living/as occupation.
