Ad valorem

[edit]

The statement "In English law, poundage was an ad valorem (in proportion to value) customs duty imposed on imports and exports at the rate of 1 shilling for every pound (of weight) of goods imported or exported" looks wrong. If it had been 1 shilling for every pound of value then it would indeed be a 5% ad valorem duty, but 1 shilling for every pound of weight is based on quantity while unrelated to value, and so I think it looks like a specific duty (even if it is general here). 2A00:23C6:1492:7A01:3033:9B51:6A6E:7BEA (talk) 21:12, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
