Merging with cancellation would take two right-sized articles and make one overly-broad and long article. Also, I now have some material to scan for this article, so it will get longer. Why would anybody propose a merge in the first place? Stan 12:30, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
Aside from size, there would also be a significant reduction in clarity. Postal marking provides more information (and other implications) than cancellation of postage. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.143.35.70 (talk • contribs)
Furthermore, a cancellation is a specific variety of a postal marking. Postal markings were used on stampless covers prior to the existence of postage stamps. After the introduction of postage stamps, postal markings were (and are) used by the postal authorities to record steps taken during the mail delivery process. Many of these markings are applied to the envelope or package and not directly on the stamp or stamps. As such, they are not cancellations. Philcomp 17:40, May 21, 2006
