Discovery of positron
[edit]Who observed what when has been discussed on this talk page regarding the discovery of the positron. But, in reading this article, it remains puzzling as to why Dmitri Skobeltsyn is not given credit for the discovery of the positron. Did he not do anything with his cloud-chamber observations of 1929? Perhaps not publish them? Anyway, right now, the article confusing on this matter. Attic Salt (talk) 13:57, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
Precise mass of electron
[edit]The infobox currently quotes the very precisely known electron mass as positron mass. I don't think this is the right way. It is known that electron and positron mass agree within an uncertainty of 8e-9 (see Review of Particle Properties) So this should be the precision given in the infobox, not the much smaller value for the electron. -- Wassermaus (talk) 17:53, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
Hanson's claims
[edit]Our article says:
- In his book on the history of the positron discovery from 1963, Norwood Russell Hanson has given a detailed account of the reasons for this assertion, and this may have been the origin of the myth. But he also presented Skobeltsyn's objection to it in an appendix. Later, Skobeltsyn rejected this claim even more strongly, calling it "nothing but sheer nonsense".
Two review of Hanson,
- Feyerabend PK. Review of Norwood R. Hanson,The Concept of the Positron: A Philosophical Analysis, New York: Cambridge University Press, 1963(1964). In: Gattei S, Agassi J, eds. Physics and Philosophy: Philosophical Papers. Cambridge University Press; 2015:315-317.
- Pryce, M. H. L. (1963). The Concept of the Positron. Physics Bulletin, 14(6), 165.
are very negative. I don't think Hanson is a reliable source on the particular aspect of the discovery of the positron. Johnjbarton (talk) 23:48, 13 November 2025 (UTC)
