Merge two articles or not

Speculation is that Portland's new WNBA team will be named the "Fire", reprising the name of the original team from 2000 to 2002. Assuming it turns out to be accurate, I have started a discussion regarding whether it would be better to merge "Portland Fire" and "Portland WNBA team" into one article or leave the former as is and rename the latter to something like "Portland Fire (2026)". Instead of creating "Portland Fire (2026)", what about moving "Portland Fire" to "Portland Fire (2000–2002)"? People searching "Portland Fire" should be directed to the current (pending confirmation, of course) iteration, no? ---Another Believer _(Talk) 18:41, 24 June 2025 (UTC)

OK, I see three options:

1. Merge the two articles into one

2. Move "Portland Fire" to "Portland Fire (2000–2002)" and rename "Portland WNBA team" to "Portland Fire" – I'm not sure how the redirect would work here

3. Leave "Portland Fire" as is and move "Portland WNBA team" to "Portland Fire (2026)".

I'm not sure how the redirect would work - Portland Fire would be renamed first, then history swap the new Portland Fire redirect with this page. I can handle it if no one else does it first if/when the time comes. -- ZooBlazer 19:00, 24 June 2025 (UTC)

I would say let's wait and see if the WNBA will consider the new Fire as a new expansion franchise or a continuation of the previous franchise, with a 20+ year gap. Of course, it might be awhile before we know. Assadzadeh (talk) 18:08, 15 July 2025 (UTC)

• Strongly oppose – most Wikipedia searches today for "Portland Fire" are going to be for the team that begins playing in 2026, not the one that played over 20 years ago. Also, although the team has yet to play a single game, the franchise is in existence, as they have already hired a president and general manager and are preparing for the expansion draft. Therefore, it is definitely a primary topic.

Comment: Is it confirmed that they are not keeping the history? We have cases where a new team gets the old history when they take the old name, like the Charlotte Hornets or Cleveland Browns, and in that case we would merge the pages. Ladtrack (talk) 06:39, 28 August 2025 (UTC)

Strongly oppose – This page is clearly the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, as the WNBA overall (especially in this area) gets far more coverage than a volleyball league (yes, I know you're talking about Major League Volleyball (2026), which will likely be moved to the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC once that league begins play). Franchise history

Not opening any discussion of merging the two Fire articles yet, since everything is quite unclear given the lack of media coverage and WP:OR. But it seems like the WNBA and the teams (at least the ones with publically accessible game notes) that have played both the original Fire and have played the current Fire team so far in the season treat the two as the same franchise like a Cleveland Browns situation.

The WNBA website's official profile on their website. Note the founding year as 2026 on the website, unlike the app which lists 2000, which muddies the water while listing original Fire players as franchise leaders in multiple categories. Game notes from the Fire, Liberty, and Sun, which all are combining the original Fire's W/L matchup records between these teams with the current one.

The other 3 teams the Fire have played so far, the Tempo and Sky did not exist while the original Fire existed, while the Fever do not have publically available game notes as far as I can tell, though their pre-game preview uses wording that treats the Fire as completely new. Hi, I work with the Portland Fire organization. The logo currently displayed in the infobox is an outdated mark and is no longer our primary logo. I have the current official SVG logo and would appreciate assistance from an autoconfirmed editor in updating the article and file.
