The text for the GXP description seems to be lifted from another source...

http://www.caranddriver.com/autoshows/10963/2007-pontiac-solstice-gxp.html http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/AutoshowArticles/articleId=108749

Is that the official Press Release text? If it is, can wikipedia use it legally? -LRW

I haven't heard of the Chevrolet G2X- where is this information comming from? --Tom Dietrich 14:43, 1 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't know. There is however a Daewoo G2X-that could be what that is referencing. I'll change it to the Daewoo. Bok269 13:53, 9 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

The picture that I posted on Wikipedia is a possible image violation. This picture will be deleted on Wikipedia, but a new picture of the Solstice will be posted soon. I owe it to you guys. Sorry. --The Helper S

I replaced the photo last night.

The entire performance section appears to have been lifted from this page:

Trivia Paring

[edit]

The trivia section, aside from being against guidelines, is huge and in need of serious paring. I think first on the chopping block should be the bit about parts-sharing - surprise, surprise, it is a GM vehicle and it shares parts with other GM vehicles. Ayocee (talk) 20:55, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Mallett omission?

[edit]

About 100 Solstices and a few dozen Skys were converted to V8 engines by Chuck Mallett direct from the Delaware Wilmington plant. Various options included a big-brake kit as well as several Corvette-supplied GM LS engines. A small section should add this conversion as it did 8 years ago as noteworthy. Typically the conversion was an LS2, 400 Hp option, though a few LS3 and LS7 swaps were made. These were official GM upgrades that could be purchased at Pontiac dealerships as a Mallett conversion for about an additional $31000. When I bought my Sky Redline in 2008 I had that option from the Saturn dealership but passed. I have one of the V8 Solstices.

OK, I'm gonna say it: What the hell is with the weight statistics?

[edit]

I have seen absolutely mind-boggling variations on what the weight of these Kappa vehicles are, and it can't just be options on the Sky/Solstice, because the GXP Solstice has been reported at 2,976 lbs on the information widget here (found in absolutely none of the sources from what I can tell) while the source at Car and Driver (https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a15149527/2009-pontiac-solstice-gxp-coupe-instrumented-test/) calls the GXP "49 pounds heavier" than the base model, but by our widget, that would make the GXP 2909 lbs (2860+49), and I've seen anything from 3080, 2900, "just under" 3000, whatever the heck that means...

It would behoove us to find a better source on this and more importantly something consistent. If anyone can help on this, that would be appreciated, thank y'all. TheSaturnLover (talk) 03:33, 10 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Lofty Proposal

[edit]

I would like to propose a merger of the Solstice and Sky pages on the basis that the G2X is lumped into the Sky page. The Opel GT, being a continuation of the namesake of the older GT and a predecessor to the modern GT concept, should probably retain its own page. However, the Sky is a full rebadge of the Solstice with almost exclusively cosmetic differences. Furthermore, should this be done, it could be merged with the Kappa platform page, too, as this hypothetical article would essentially be the Kappa Platform automobile page.

Given no protest to this, I will begin writing a draft of this page :) TheSaturnLover (talk) 15:39, 17 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

I'm curious what other editors think of this proposal, as well as how you plan to execute it, particularly in regard to which sections you plan to keep or get rid of. When it comes to cars that are close to being rebadges (same platform and powertrain), but with noticeable styling and interior differences, the precedent for merging is unclear. Cars like the 3000GT/Stealth are merged into one page, while cars like the Matrix/Vibe retain their own pages. Cars that are more similar, like the 86/BRZ, are merged, and cars that are less similar, like the Miata and 124 Spider (different engine same platform), are separate. Also, as far as naming goes, i'm guessing you plan to merge the Sky article into the Solstice article and use that article's name since the Solstice was introduced first. I wouldn't support the new page being under the name "General Motors Kappa Platform" though as that would be confusing for average readers. TKOIII (talk) 20:09, 17 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
@TKOIII yeah, fuzzy precedent would probably complicate a lot... don't worry, I may be TheSaturnLover, but chronology is something I respect. Names I consider would include:
"Pontiac Solstice"
"General Motors Kappa Platform Vehicles"
"General Motors Kappa Roadsters"
(with redirects for Solstice /where applicable/ Sky, G2X, and some kind of redirect for the GT, although how to do that without stepping on the toes of the current GT article)
some variations on names may be nice. Truthfully, this is a lot more conceptual than reality right now. I don't want to start if the project would be inherently unpopular. :) TheSaturnLover (talk) 21:01, 17 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
The only one of those I see as being viable would be merging everything under the Solstice name, with the other articles redirecting to it. There aren't any car articles I know of where the main article is under the name of the platform, as it makes finding the article difficult (particularly through Google search), even with redirects. With merges like this, one of the key considerations is whether you're actually making the process of finding and reading the article easier and clearer for an average reader and not more difficult. TKOIII (talk) 21:27, 17 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Reasonable points. I thought precedent on G2X was good for a starting point, but it's not unlikely such a merger as this would only further obscure the memory of the Sky & G2X in a somewhat frivolous attempt at accuracy. TheSaturnLover (talk) 21:42, 17 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
I would like to revive this discussion for review. Upon viewing the Opel Astra/Saturn Astra case, I think it may be a good idea to merge Solstice/Sky/G2X articles into one... need clarity on what to make of GT.
I think this may be the preferable option because arbitrarily having vehicles that are functionally the same be separated by article may create a precedent for continuing this, even with more minor vehicles with fewer sources. As the G2X is not split from the Sky article, I think the Sky should not be split from the Solstice article.
Should the Astra's example be used? TheSaturnLover (talk) 21:21, 9 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I don't have a particularly strong opinion here, save for what I said earlier that it should use the name of one of the cars, probably the Solstice, rather than the platform name. I think your next step should be to formally propose a merger according to the instructions in Wikipedia:Merging, which will raise attention to the idea, and allow you to get feedback from other prominent editors on what they think of it. Lofty Proposal Reversion

[edit]
Unsure how to respond -- I am a little shocked that the Saturn Sky page is gone. I added a lot of info to that. Now it shows as a subsection of "The Saturn Sky was Saturn's rebadge of the Solstice", which is not even remotely true. Do people really think these cars are the same except a badge? These pages even mention the Opel GT, so this information is well known. Please keep these separate. ~2026-27445-96 (talk) 20:43, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
"However, the Sky is a full rebadge of the Solstice with almost exclusively cosmetic differences." No, no, and no. There was a reason the MSRP differed by $5k. It was not the badges. Let's please not summarize like this without facts. ~2026-27445-96 (talk) 20:47, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Well the fact was that, beneath the skin, these vehicles differed very little. Same platform, motor, transmission, rim & tire sizes, GM-supported modifications... lots of parts sharing for the interior. Let's not kid ourselves, now, for as much information as anyone has added to that page, it is not deniable that it is, at the very least, an exceedingly similar vehicle.
Also, a five thousand dollar difference on a vehicle price is not a good argument for why that vehicle would be considered distinctive enough to have its own page. Corvette price ranges, for example, are massive, far beyond even ten times that figure. Yet they are still the same vehicle, at least in simplification (which is, to a degree, what Wikipedia is).
If how that is summarized is not factual, it would serve your argumentation well to determine what exactly isn't factual about it and why. TheSaturnLover (talk) 22:05, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think we should first start with what supports the merge (rather than assuming a merge by default, and asking why not). The points for the merge suggested all vehicles under the Kappa platform could be a single article. Practically every vehicle in existence shares a platform with another; so we are already well off base already. We need to reset to a standard base. The default is that two vehicles have their own page, and facts must show why a merge, not assume all cars should be merged, and then state why not. E.g. Open GT and Saturn Sky Red Line are the same car, and even then we don't put them on the same page.
Additional consideration: Are we combining the Lamborghini Gallardo and the Audi R8 V10? Same platform, same V10 engine, same drivetrain. What about the Hummer H2, Cadillac Escalade, and Chevrolet Tahoe? Same platform, powertrain, suspension. I don't think this fits.
Agreed price is not enough by itself. The $5k difference wasn't meant to compare like various Corvette builds. If the car really is just a rebadge, then the badge itself costs $5k; even with marketing, this cannot be true. The cars are mechanically very much alike. After doing more research I see that some of the things that I thought differed were closer than expected such as the suspension, so ignore that mistake of mine. The similarities also seem closer in the Red Line / GXP versions vs. the base models (this makes me wonder if high end models were all introduced at the same time with the Opel GT Roadster). The main differences are aesthetics exterior and interior changes, along with various options. My main argument was mechanical changes implied enough difference, but they are a lot closer than I originally thought. ~2026-27445-96 (talk) 08:42, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
For support of the merger, primarily history section motivated that. The Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice share a related history in development, that and the massive parts sharing.
For why the Opel GT has its own page, that's because the primarily recognizable iteration of that car is independent of the Kappas.
As for the Escalade/Tahoe/H2, I think only the H2 should be treated separately. I'd go as far as to say I'm very pro-merger when it comes to vehicle pages because of the shared history vehicles built on the same platform/with the same powertrain end up having. Ideally, I want to put the Cobalt SS page back to the Cobalt page, too.
The only reason the two-page solution would be considered default is because of antiquity: this is the current default and I would expect argumentation as to why they're separate vehicles rather than the same as being needed to make a justification for the separation. Merger Proposal

I think that, based on the Opel/Saturn Astra's example, we would benefit from condensing the two articles. I say so on a few bases:

First, the Sky and G2X are already condensed into one page, and while aesthetically the Sky and Solstice are different, under the skin they are essentially the same car.

Next, the history of the Kappa chassis as a whole makes more sense when written about side-by-side. The convertible SC2 and then "Sky" name as concepts, the Solstice's introduction as a concept car, and the Sky name being attached to the platform are less clearly communicated by having two pages. While potentially a more cluttered page may emerge from a merger, a more comprehensive history of the Kappa cars as a whole would benefit from the process.

Finally, it would eliminate needless differences between the pages. For example, the Solstice and Sky pages, despite sharing most of the same parts, have differing "shared technology" segments (in that the Sky does not have one and the Solstice has a problematic one).

-

For fairness's sake, some potential weaknesses of this idea:

There is the potential that the page could become needlessly long and bloated. It doesn't have to be, but it could be with mismanagement in mind.

There is also the unanswered question mark of the GT: if these pages were to merge, would this not jeopardize the position of the Opel GT page, since by similar (though admittedly not exactly the same) logic, it could be feasibly merged into this one as well.

There is finally the cost of time: could the time spent on merging the pages be better spent on improving both pages individually?

-

I think a merged page makes more sense from the perspective of the history of the platform and cars, but I concede clarity and tangible overview qualities have a higher potential of being harmed from such a move. What do y'all think? TheSaturnLover (talk) 21:08, 28 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

I agree ~2025-31433-65 (talk) 07:12, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
In general, I agree. As you pointed out, some care will need to be taken given it was also badged as the Opel GT, which has a unique history going back decades. The current Opel GT page handles this quite well, I think, so just a little care needs to be taken to ensure things don't get messed up. I think there's also a question on which badge should get the page title. Pontiac had (by far) the most units, but the Sky shared the common styling with all the badges EXCEPT the Solstice. I can see arguments both ways. ~2025-31585-17 (talk) 00:04, 6 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@~2025-31585-17 My idea would be Solstice as the overarching title, with "Saturn Sky" and "Daewoo G2X" being redirects to it. Should no disagreement be lodged within the next wrek, I intend to begin work on the merging process. Thank you all for your input :) TheSaturnLover (talk) 00:11, 6 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Weak Oppose - I think there's enough unique content on each page to keep them both around. If one had much more than the other, I would say merge the smaller to the larger, but they're similar in size. That said, some cleanup of each can be done, particularly with details like production by trim/color or what parts came from other cars. --Vossanova o< 03:52, 6 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Also, it's a different scenario than Saturn Astra/Opel Astra. There, the Saturn is essentially the Opel for the North American market, and the Opel is the original with many more variants. This is closer to a Pontiac 6000/Chevrolet Celebrity scenario. --Vossanova o< 03:55, 6 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Removal of "Motorsport" Section

[edit]

I noticed that in one of the previous edits, the Solstice's "Motorsport" section was removed. What was the reason? The SCCA results are often discussed in context of the Solstice, from what I can tell, and as such I think that some of the vehicle's history may be lost in its removal. Not to imply I'm seeking a vindication, or anything absurd like that, I would just like a viable explanation for its removal. Thank you :) TheSaturnLover (talk) 16:03, 9 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Heya, i removed it as it was almost entirely unsourced. Feel free to add it back. FaviFake (talk) 18:00, 9 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Absolutely, then. In that case 100% see why. I'll get to work :) TheSaturnLover (talk) 18:01, 9 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

On "This section does not cite any sources."

[edit]

This section is a visual difference segment between the cars. The photography provided is intended to act as the means of authentication here. To me, it would seem requesting sources beyond the opening paragraph for this section is redundant, and as such I am requesting y'all's permission to remove that template. Idea for listing common problems/design flaws

[edit]

I think a section on design flaws, such as the hood-open door collision point, and reputation for certain problems, like the all-too-common water pump issue- could be of use. What do y'all think? TheSaturnLover (talk) 22:10, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
