Why not the historic county also? In this case Lancashire.

What has Wikipedia got against the historic counties of England?

These ancient counties exist as they always have done throughout time and in many people's eyes carry far more credibility than the 'made up' phoney counties of 1974.

Hi,

It is not that Wikipedia has anything against historical counties, it is simply that the information in the article should reflect current factual information relating to the articles subject. The Wigan area pages at least all include mention of the fact it was historically in Lancashire, so there is no real requirement to add the information elsewhere. Since 1974 (40 years is a decent amount of time I would argue) Wigan and it's Metropolitan Borough have been in Greater Mancheter so the article needs to reflect this.

Another important point is the issue of bias on Wikipedia. Your message above displays bias. You ask "who in the right mind would include Greater Manchester in their address" - well anyone who lived in the Metroplitan Borough of Wigan for a start - however the Royal Mail do not use Greater Manchester (or Merseyside) as postal addresses.
