Name change from "Platform game" to "Platformer"

[edit]

This is a major genre page, so changing the name based on a 2-1 vote is ridiculous. It needed to be done in a forum with more visibility.

Second, both terms are common. If I type "platform" into the App Store search box, the top result is "Platform game" and the next is "Platformer".

A change like this cascades out into pointless work renaming categories and, eventually, thousands of genre links in game articles, for absolutely no benefit. Dgpop (talk) 14:44, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I am uncertain of which categories you are referring to. I already did a speedy rename for the affected categories. And these "thousands of links" do not need to be modified, as they will simply be redirected. That is why redirects exist. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 13:41, 14 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
(updated) @Zxcvbnm, when I looked at Google Books Ngrams (through 2019), "platform game" or "platform games" were still used many multiples more times than the terms "Platformer" and "platformers" respectively - would be curious to see your source Superb Owl (talk) 19:34, 14 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Platform adventure section

[edit]

On reading through this section, it seems to be a bit off. We are describing open nature games but the term "platform adventure" does not seem to be used in its sources, or its pulling bits and pieces of text, but is failing WP:STICKTOSOURCE. I know the term Metroidvania is contentious for some people, but it seems to be afraid to apply it here and wants to use a more generic term (which I personally don't mind), but it's not in use at all. Its list of "here's some popular games in the cycle" does not really make it more appealing to read or help people either as its not a list of genre thing. Criteria for mention and citation requirements

[edit]

Many games mentioned in the article do not have citations to back up its significance. Many games that are referenced use review/review aggregator pages that only show their acceptance. Games are mentioned without accompanying information above review scores, such as of the games' impact to the greater market with novel ideas. I find the contents of the article to be heavily composed of arbitrary lists of popular games that do not explain platformers, of its history, and concepts. Therefore, I believe the games are mentioned by their review scores should be removed, and any games to be included should be irreplaceable, the claim which must be sourced. --Naruyoko (talk) 17:38, 18 December 2024 (UTC) Edited: submitted too early. --Naruyoko (talk) 17:42, 18 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

“Jump ‘n’ run games”

[edit]

I can find only a handful of instances of this term used across the internet. There are (slightly) more instances of “jump and run,” without the contracted “and.” Nothing I’ve found approaches authoritative use. Am I missing something? King Crab Kid (talk) 17:18, 19 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

I’m deleting “or jump n’ run game”. Google has less than 3k monthly searches for “jump and run game,” and too little data to measure for “jump ‘n’ run game.” I can find no authortative source that either are commonly used. Please feel free to revert if source is found. King Crab Kid (talk) 18:35, 22 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Looking at results from Googke Books and Google Scholar, its a term that is more familiar in Germany than in English-speaking countries (eg: "Gamification of Life and the Gaming Society: The Ludic Century" By Fabian Arlt, Hans-Jürgen Arlt · 2023). And yes, this is "jump n run" with different variations on where the apostrophes go. I'm not saying we should keep it, but it is a legit term for the genre. Masem (t) 18:43, 22 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Interesting! Is there a guideline here? King Crab Kid (talk) 04:50, 23 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
