What is the difference between planar chirality and axial chirality?

The subject/headline says it all: what is the difference between planar chirality and axial chirality?

My lecture notes discuss substituted biphenyls, including 2,2′-dimethylbiphenyl, stating that they are axially chiral.

This article cites the very same 2,2′-dimethylbiphenyl as a prime example of planar chirality.

Are planar and axial chirality synonymous?

No - one exhibits chirality by differenciating the enantiotopic faces of a planar molecule or ring - as in the drawn metallocene example shown on the page or in cyclophanes. The other is due to a helical arrangement about an axis - such as in chiral atropisomerism (biaryls), heptahelicene etc. The artical is confused and not correct. Note that the natural product Cavicularin exhibits both planar and axial chirality as it is a 2,2' biaryl and a cyclophane
