Not true. And the island was never a 'penal site' where convicts were punished by starvation. Just another of a host of 'Botany Bay Myths' to do with the early history of European settlement. The island was unoccupied, though there is hearsay of a murderer being gibbeted there in chains.
The 'gut' in question is the deepwater channel in Port Jackson traditionally followed by shipping. As the channel draws near to the prominence now known as 'Mrs Macquarie's Chair', it is 'pinched' (narrowed) betweeen the former island - where the Martello Tower was built to repel with cannon a feared Russian invasion during the Crimean War - and the point.
A similar myth concerns Kissing Point on the Parramatta River. Nothing to do with canoodling; there was a submerged rock which 'kissed' (struck) the keels of passing vessels. 2401:D006:A202:7E00:2CB4:E844:1629:9A38 (talk) 00:41, 29 May 2025 (UTC)
