Length

The infobox says that there are three different versions of this song:

• 5:40 (album version)
• 4:30 (single version)
• 3:05 (SP radio edit version)

But it doesn't include any information about the differences between these versions, or explain if the lyrics are abridged in the shorter versions. Can we add a few words about that? 98.123.38.211 (talk) 20:17, 25 October 2025 (UTC)

– The song is the primary topic for "Piano Man". It has more than half the pageviews of every article titled something like "Piano Man", and over a third more pageviews than the album, which is the second-most viewed. It also has over 60% of clickthroughs out of the disambiguation page, almost double the clickthroughs of the album. The song is "is highly likely—much more likely than any other single topic, and more likely than all the other topics combined—to be the topic sought" for the term "Piano Man".

It's also probably the primary topic by long-term significance. The song is in the Grammy Hall of Fame, and has been inducted in the National Recording Registry for "cultural, historic, or artistic significance". It's often regarded as one of the greatest songs of all time, and has given its singer Billy Joel his long-time nickname because it's his signature song. The album isn't as important overall and with relatively little else of importance, the song is pretty easily the primary topic by long-term significance. At the moment, both the uppercase and lowercase terms are leading to the same name, i.e., Piano Man, which is currently a disambiguation page. This discussion is proposing to change what that name leads to, so it is natural to wonder whether the lowercase version should be retargeted to the new location of the disambiguation page if there is one. I don't think it would be helpful to start a separate discussion somewhere else when the two issues are intertwined, as they both involve the primary topic question for the same string of words, so I think we should discuss that here. —⁠ ⁠BarrelProof (talk) 19:48, 4 September 2026 (UTC)

I would say no, because piano woman doesn't exist and because I don't think people typing for lowercase "piano man" are likely to be looking for an actual pianist compared to the song, but if consensus goes the other way I'd be fine with that. Ladtrack (talk) 22:01, 4 September 2026 (UTC)
