Notable classical composer?

[edit]

I removed the Composer banner (used for 'classical' composers), but now it's back. Can we have some information to establish him a notable composer? Thanks. --Kleinzach 10:29, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

He isn't he's Just a guy who was in The Wiggles for Like 2 Minutes and now is Like Really Upset that the wiggles are so Big and no one knows who he is.. --Jena (talk) 23:37, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I'm the one who restored it because he is a composer now... but Klein is right, he isn't notable as such. Upon thinking about it, he's probably right in that it should be removed. He was notable for writing songs with the wiggles, but his classical compositions have not made him notable.---Balloonman NO! I'm Spartacus! 07:56, 15 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

OK. I've removed it. Thanks. --Kleinzach 03:09, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Fifth Wiggle

[edit]

Wilcher wants to get rid of the name "the fifth Wiggle",[1] and it seems he is not known as that anyway, so I have removed the phrase from the article. Maproom (talk) 10:53, 4 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

  1. Sams, Christine (2005-08-01). "The Fifth Wiggle speaks out". The Sun-Herald.
Maproom, that's fine, but the article you cite states that Wilcher has been called "the fifth Wiggle", so we should state that's what he's known for, despite his feelings about it. I went ahead and added his feelings, since the article is clear about that. Someone (most likely me) needs to improve this article, anyway. It shouldn't take very long, but it will be a little while until I get around to it. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:48, 4 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
The article I cite states "Phillip Wilcher wants to get rid of the tag "Fifth Wiggle" for good". But it provides no evidence that he ever was so known; and I have been unable to find any. A Google search for "fifth Wiggle" finds that article, and the Wikipedia article, but nothing else associated with Philip Wilcher. So I think it's better not to mention it in the article. Maproom (talk) 11:03, 5 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Dear Maproom and Christine (Figureskatingfan):

Please allow me to introduce myself to you. I address myself to you with respect and best wishes in the spirit of consultation. My name is Phillip Wilcher. I am the user 124.183.90.78 Jena (who is also known here as ANTONIOROCKS and as JENBETH5 at Youtube) refers to as the one who contributed additions to my page here at Wikipedia requesting you keep an eye on me. If I may clarify for you, I am a very well established composer here in Australia and I am recognised by my kind overseas. I have two publishers, being The Keys Press and Publications by Wirripang and I have Full Representation Status with the Australia Music Centre who act as agents on my behalf. I am an Elected Full Life Member of the Australasian Performing Rights Association as well as being an Associate Musician of the State Conservatorium of Music in Sydney. I hold two Performer Diplomas and my music is frequently broadcast on ABC-FM and 2MBS-FM. The Sydney based radio station 2MBS-FM have broadcast two documentaries on my work as a composer, one being a two hour presentation by Mike Smith which was titled "Phillip Wilcher and the French Connection" and the other a 30 minute presentation by Jan Brown titled "Wilcher's World". My work is also recognised and published by the Australian Music Examinations Board. My music is studied by students at the HSC level. I am also recognised by the Royal Schools of Music in London who acknowledge my birthday amongst their forums every year. More directly related to The Wiggles themselves, in Greg Page's autobiography "Now and Then" he refers to me as a "musical genius" in the chapter on the formation of The Wiggles titled "A Wiggly Genesis". Few people the world over would actually know that Anthony Field also happens to be my Godfather and his mother Marie Field is my Godmother, although I am not sure they would feel all that comfortable if that was made public knowledge. I have never once regretted not being a Wiggle. I have never once felt that I missed out on any level of fame or fortune because as I have previously stated, I am utterly satisfied by my creativity. I think if you were to visit my website and read everything that is there and perhaps visit my channel at Youtube, you would realise this for yourself. I have no need or desire to be anyone other than who I am. Believe me. I dismiss outright Jena's accusation above that I am in any way upset, least of all with her for the above misconceptions she has expressed about me, which at any personal level, are totally unfounded and untrue. I do not know her, nor does she personally know me. If Wikipedia as I believe prides itself on the truth and on fact and on being a reliable reference point, I feel that must be said. I trust one day however Jena might come to know a little better and not place so much faith in newspaper articles she may have read about me that were misconceptions, the article by Christine Sams being a case in point. It's all good though. For your information, the only articles I acknowledge as being valid that were written about me as the Fifth Wiggle are :

1. A Life Less Wiggly (Steve Dow, Sydney Morning Herald) 2. The Fifth Man (Cheryl Critchley, Herald Sun Weekend) 3. Becoming a Top Pre School Band Was No Child's Play For The Wiggles (Nick March, The National, Abu Dhabi)

Perhaps if you would so wish, you might care to contact these journalists. They alone have integrity and can verify their authorship of the articles and their own personal knowledge of me.

Whether any of this information is considered within Wikipedia's biographical guidelines and is of help to you in improving the article here about me (I gather you are seeking to do so from your above comment) , I do not know, but perhaps if you so wish, you yourself might care to contact me directly through my website as is listed here at Wikipedia. Simply access the contact page and email me. I am not too certain about what the protocols and procedures are, but I feel being who I am, I could certainly clarify for you any information you might need to know and answer for you any questions truthfully. I would be most happy to do so.

Blessings and best wishes,

I thank you,

Phillip Wilcher A. Mus.A; A.T.C.L (Practical)

I have responded to Mr. Wilcher's request that his bio be improved with more reliable and accurate sources; see my talk page here . As I state there, it's my intention to address his concerns and work on this article in the next week or so. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 19:58, 5 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ok guys I left this letter up but I should have took it down a long time ago if this guy is Wilcher he is lying through his teeth he is OLDER then Anthony so Anthony can NOT be his godfather (Anthony never even met Phillip before Macquarie University) so I think we can Ignore this guy Jena (talk) 15:51, 3 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

@ANTONIOROCKS:, I'd just let this go if I were you. Please don't delete this discussion; it's against policy to remove content from talk pages, mostly so that others can see it in case the subject comes up again. BTW, it is possible for someone to be someone's godfather, even if he's older. Welcher could be an adult convert to Catholicism, and might have been baptized when he was older, and Anthony could have agreed to stand up for him. At any rate, Merry Christmas! Question for administrator

[edit]

{{admin help}} Hello I requested that this page be deleted Because Phillip Wilcher is not a Famous or noteworthy Person also Wilcher Basically wrote the article himself with the help of User talk:Figureskatingfan I did not think you could do that to an article about yourself I would Like an Admin to look at this please Thank you

Writing about yourself (WP:AUTO) is strongly discouraged - not banned, partly I suspect that it would be impossible to police to that degree. The PROD was rejected by another editor - suggest you use WP:AfD if you think it should go to get a full discussion on the article's merits.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:17, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
As much as I sympathesize with the sentiments expressed here (Hi Jena!), I agree with the PROD decision--that although the subject of this article is borderline notable, he's notable enough. Wilcher has made another request that I edit his article, but I've been busy with RL concerns and with what I think are more important tasks here, and I've let it slide. I will get to it eventually. I do resent my part in the improvement of this article, but I think that all articles on WP should be improved, regardless of our personal feelings. I'm committed to ensuring that all articles about The Wiggles are high-quality, well-researched, and well-written. I've fallen short of that goal in many ways, but I think that I've come far in accomplishing it. BTW, this isn't the first time folks have asked me to edit, usually folks who don't have the time or ability to learn how. I find them very helpful; they usually provide me with sources, which is really all the Wilcher has done. I think that's better than the subject editing his own article, which, as Ronhjones reminds us, isn't encouraged. I and others have educated Wilcher about that, and to his credit, he's complied. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 21:45, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I removed the PROD because he's borderline notable, but there's enough good-quality verifiable third-party references both to write the article and, importantly, that someone might actually come to Wikipedia to look him up - and the stats bear that out - there's plenty of clearly notable topics that don't get a consistent 100-200 views a day - David Gerard (talk) 22:21, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ancestry

[edit]

I was thinking we could use the Grandsen Family Web Page to include info on Wilcher's ancestry. His mother is included on the site. (EditorE (talk) 23:29, 5 April 2013 (UTC))Reply

I'm not sure that it's a reliable source, so probably not. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 03:43, 6 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

About these reverts

[edit]

The reverts really need to stop. Edits claim that my contributions to this article are vandalism and have unsourced info, while that's really not true. I would like to have a more clear explanation on why my edits were reverted, because what worries me is that an edit war will occur. So please, keep the article stable. EditorE (talk) 11:43, 16 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not Notable

[edit]

is the Only Reason Wilcher Has an Article is because he was in the Wiggles for a Few Months? I do not think that is Reason Enough  Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:5B0:221A:F6C8:C140:6BBF:F9D5:E0EB (talk) 14:51, 8 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

No, as the article states, Wilcher was involved in the early stages of the group's development, wrote a few of their first songs, and appeared on their first album. Obviously he's notable enough for his article to have passed to a GA. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:22, 8 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Article Style and Quality

[edit]

I feel the need to weigh in on this article because I'm working on a project in which I've read literally hundreds of articles about twentieth and twenty-first century composers and this is the most over-written and fussily detailed article I've ever encountered. Is there any other article on the site that lists dosages for medication of a non-fatal condition? Or one that includes an anecdote about an organist being moved to tear (one single tear!) by a piano performance? I concur with the above "Question for administrator" that this article reads as if it were written by the subject, almost as a sort of memoir. I would recommend that the article be drastically curtailed, with random anecdotes, purple passages and medical data removed. Thanks! Mainepianist (talk) 01:33, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

I agree, and yes Phillip dose edit this Article, this needs to be Addressed. Jena (talk) 13:30, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I wouldn't be surprised if Wilcher edits this article and I agree that it's full of unimportant information, is overly-detailed, and is badly written. And I think that I'm being generous. I also suspect that the sources aren't reliable or trustworthy enough, since they're mostly things that Wilcher wrote. Here's my suggestion, because to be honest, I don't want to waste my time correctingall of that, evn though I've worked on it in the past. This article has been GA since 2013; I think that the current version obviously no longer qualifies. I'll be happy to submit it for a GAR, so it will probably lose its GA-status. The other thing we can do is slap all kinds of tags and warnings on it. I'm willing to do both of those things, but it may take me several days to get to it. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 23:33, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Awesome! Glad I'm not the only one who finds it problematic as currently written. Thanks! Mainepianist (talk) 23:35, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh, shoot. I'm almost an expert at GAR by now, so I'm happy to send this eminently-deserving pile over there for dissection and analysis. 😂 Bgsu98 (Talk) 21:56, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Bgsu98, what a good egg you are! I've always been able to count on you, and here you are, stepping up to do the right thing again. Thanks, this was an awesome thing to do. Everyone, if you can, go over to the many figure skating articles that Bgsu has submitted for review at GAN and FAC and see how you can help. Bloated, full of unimportant information, overly-detailed, badly written, unreliable primary sources written by the subject of the article, and likely edited by the subject himself. This needs some significant pruning at the very least. Bgsu98 (Talk) 21:58, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I suggest looking at this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Owlmirror15 Jena (talk) 23:09, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Jena Fi, are you saying that User:Owlmirror15 is a sockpuppet of Wilcher? Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 21:15, 9 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think so..... someone will have to do an IP check but look at his edits.. his edits on the wiggles were reverted... Jena (talk) 21:17, 9 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
In Owlmirror15's post of 3 August 2022, they reference the "Papers of Phillip Wilcher" as a source. Citation 8 says that the papers are housed at the National Library of Australia, the website of which says that "permission is required for research during the lifetime of Philip Wilcher". So it seems unlikely that anyone else has seen the papers that Owlmirror15 claims to have. Also, "Owlmirror" seems like an inside reference to "Eulenspiegel", which would make the contributor either a fan of 16th Century German Literature or of Classical Music (i.e. Strauss's "Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche". The latter would make sense if the author is a composer. Mainepianist (talk) 22:07, 9 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • De-list: The article has been greatly expanded from 22,453 bytes when assessed as a Good Article (October 2013) to its current size of 54,108 bytes (2.4× bigger). Too much of the added content is poorly written and/or unsupported making it difficult/boring to read. Most of the additional material was added by two users: in 2018 (User:Sjbugeja) and in c.2022 (User:Owlmirror15). The article no longer meets the standards of a Good Article.Didier Landner (talk) 23:02, 10 August 2026 (UTC)23:08, 10 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Samuel Joseph Bugeja is/was a young-ish Musicology student at the University of Melbourne. One of his projects is here: https://vimeo.com/477887745. It seems likely that both of these accounts are his, and possibly that he is working for or at the behest of PW, about whom we once wrote a [now unretrievable] article cited in the Wikipedia article. Mainepianist (talk) 01:40, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • about whom HE* [sorry]

For the sake of completeness the supposedly irretrievable article by Bugeja is archived here – have fun.Didier Landner (talk) 09:46, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • So it looks like the sock puppet issue is moot, my apologies for encouraging going down that rabbit hole. At any rate, this bio should most definitely be delisted. Then we can decide what to do about it. Thanks, all. 03:37, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
