Merchant Navy service

The article currently describes him as having "worked in the merchant navy".

I would suggest it would be more usual to describe him as having "served in the merchant navy", especially given the hazardous wartime nature of his service. Several obituaries also mention that he was a mechanical engineer, so I would also suggest this could helpfully be added. BH530481 (talk) 09:24, 2 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

I have now updated the article in-line with the comment above in order to;

- reflecting his employment as "service"

- add a link for the record of the vessel's sinking, and for the Gneisenau

- changing 'boat' to 'ship'.

The article also references an interview in which he claimed to be one of 5 survivors; both wiki and other sourced mention that there were only two casualties, and this website references the crew as having been 42 at one stage.

I have therefore added "he claimed" to the description given the evidence to the contrary. However I am conscious that given the circumstances he may have believed that he was one of only 5 survivors, and may have only seen 5 as part of his own rescue, and would welcome other thoughts on how best to reflect this.
