Bryennios the Gaul, who commanded the Hautevilles' garrison in Kastoria, is unlikely to have been a Count of Brienne. Scholarly investigation has shown that at the time of the Norman occupation in the Balkans, both the Count of Brienne and his heir remained in France.

EA Freeman identified Bryennios with Brian of Brittany. Indeed, Brian reappeared in Brittany and witnessed a charter with his elder brothers Geoffrey and Alan in 1084, just after October 1083 when Bryennios refused to serve Alexios and instead agreed to return to Gaul. Note: Anna Komnene calls him a "Gaul": she does not use the word "Frank".

Brian of Brittany swiftly disappeared again from northern records, and Bryennios ("Brian of Cannae") took up a post as Constable of Apulia. Zoetropo (talk) 08:03, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
