Did you know nomination

[edit]

  • ... that "Flying Fragment" Pete Pedro, one of the first minorities to play football in the Texas state university system, led the country in touchdowns in 1961?
  • alt1... that Pete Pedro, known as the "Flying Fragment", was one of the first minorities to play football in the Texas state university system?
  • alt2 ... that Pete Pedro, known as the "Flying Fragment", led the country in touchdowns?
  • Source: * here ("Flying Fragment")
  • here "Pedro was also recognized in the display because he and two other black football players who played with him were among the first minorities to play football in the Texas state university system."
  • here. Reporting on final NCAA statistics for 1961: "Pedro scored the most touchdowns, 22."

It is also a noun. See here, 3b in particular. Cbl62 (talk) 03:56, 30 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

For anyone trouble by the use of the word "minorities", we could say:

  • alt3... that Pete Pedro, known as the "Flying Fragment", was one of the first black football players in the Texas state university system?
@Buidhe: I'm unsure if your comment suggests that "minorities" has become a disfavorted noun in today's socio-political climate. Would alt 2 or alt 3 be preferable? Cbl62 (talk) 01:52, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I consider it incorrect usage, unacceptably US-centric, and quite possibly incomprehensible to anyone not exposed to US culture. Also, my understanding is that "first X" hooks are discouraged as someone has to be first (t · c) buIdhe 05:25, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Buidhe: "First" hooks are indeed discouraged if possible, but that is because they tend to be a pain to verify and require strong sourcing to survive WT:DYK checks or WP:ERRORS. They aren't prohibited, just that they are heavily scrutinized and we sometimes only go with a "first" option if there are no good alternatives. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 10:58, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
And alt 2 doesn't use "first". Cbl62 (talk) 15:01, 21 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Full review needed, please. Cbl62 (talk) 10:56, 21 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I'll review this, but I'm currently busy at the moment. ミラP@Miraclepine 14:17, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
General: Article is new enough and long enough

Policy compliance:

  • Adequate sourcing: No - "Lynn after one semester" -> "Lynn after one year" or add ref 6. Ref 9 doesn’t say that Pedro "led the country in rushing yardage", just that Pedro was passed for scoring leader at the last week. "died in April 2018 at" -> "died on April 22, 2018 at" since the exact death date is unsupported. Height, weight, and AFD draft overall pick unsupported. Some cn/fv tags, though should support the 1960 year for Trinidad. And per RSHEADLINES, the nickname should be changed to "The Flying Fragment" or sourced to another source that spells it without "the".
  • Neutral: Yes
  • Free of copyright violations, plagiarism, and close paraphrasing: Yes

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: Yes
  • Interesting: No - I'm approving ALT2 after rejecting ALT0/1 to the concerns about first hooks in general, but I want to propose ALT3 or ALT4 since they're more hooky if the occupation is given more emphasis over the name (which would make the hook a bit too long).
QPQ: Done.

Overall: Created one calendar day after nom, size 5043 B. I'm surprised I finished this during my break. Touchdowns are one of the most internationally known aspects of American football, so not too specialist. @Cbl62: made minor fixes hope you don't mind; address the other issues and you're good to go. My proposed hooks:

Your thoughts on them? ミラP@Miraclepine 17:41, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • Thank you, User:Miraclepine. I felt that being one of the first "minority" (or "black") players in the Texas state university system was the single most interesting facts (UT didn't integrate its team until several years later), and I'm not sure why that historical fact is disqualified but if it is, you alts are fine. I will work on your fixes later today tomorrow and will ping you when it's complete. Cbl62 (talk) 18:33, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • The death date of April 22 comes from the Prairie News here: "passed away on Apri 22, 2018". See also the obituary here dated Monday, April 23, which says he "died at his home early Sunday". Other elements in process Cbl62 (talk) 16:58, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • @Miraclepine: All of your issues now addressed. I prefer the approved "alt2" which is only 79 characters long (plenty short). Also I think the name adds to the hookiness in that it conveys the ethnicity and is unusual since "Pedro" is the Spanish-language equivalent of "Pete". Cbl62 (talk) 17:34, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • @Cbl62: A few V issues still need fixing: Ref 2 should also have A7 in the page. Ref 3/4 are the same AP wire article. Ref 1 says the height is 5'7" and 175. "Pedro was unhappy at Trinidad and returned to Lynn after one semester" should have ref 8 added given the first half is not supported. You missed one fv tag. And fix "976" -> "876".
  • Regarding the hook: the problem here is that one's idea of what conveys race/ethnicity (through name or not) can very differently through the world, which is why I proposed ALT3/4 to be a first choice. Also, 3/4 are only 92 and 84 characters long, not too long. What do you think? ミラP@Miraclepine 20:44, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Will look at those issues and address them later today, but I don't like the anonymous hooks 3 and 4. Prefer the alt2. I just don't see a reason to anonymize and conceal the person's name. "Pete Pedro" is the subject's name, core information about the subject. It is also an unusual and interesting name, and anonymizing it makes the hook less interesting ... and without any good reason for doing so as the "alt 2" is even shorter than alts 3 and 4. Cbl62 (talk) 22:16, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
The correct rushing yardage for 1961 is 966 yards. I have corrected it from 976 and added a definitive encyclopedic source (Sports Reference). Cbl62 (talk) 22:16, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Miraclepine: I think that covers everything. Cbl62 (talk) 22:25, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, didn't notice the catchy nature of the name. And for the record, I got the 876 from the 1961 News and Observe ref. Since the fv tag was made in error, this covers everything and we'll go with ALT2. ミラP@Miraclepine 22:39, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
