Isn't this a title rather than a clan?iFaqeer | Talk to me! 23:05, Oct 20, 2004 (UTC)

  • Yes it is a title. But this article talks about Peshwas which was a generic name for the rulers with that title. Alren 16:29, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)
My point then is that this should not be under Category:Ruling clans of India but under Category:Indian monarchs and included in List of Indian monarchs.iFaqeer | Talk to me! 20:46, Oct 23, 2004 (UTC)
This was a title and the Peshwas did periodically go to Satara to pay their respects, and report to their master, the Raja of Satara, who descended from the founder of the Maratha Empire, Shivaji. But eventually they began ruling under their own name, as the Raja remained the titular head.Mohnish 14:46, 20 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Ramachandrapant Bawadekar Amatya

[edit]

I believe that Amatya and Peshawa are two different titles. (Please see Wikipedia article Ashta Pradhan). Did Ramachandrapant officially hold the title of Peshwa? Best to my knowledge, Chatrapati Sambhaji named Nilo Moreshwar (son of Moropant) as the next Peshawa after Moropant. Can anbody elaborate more on this issue?

Infobox

[edit]

The Infobox needs significant editing to remove misleading information. The Peshwa, certainly the ones before the Bhat family, could not be described as monarchs. The situation is somewhat complicated with later Bhat family Peshwas. They could be described as Quasi-monarchs.Jonathansammy (talk) 16:59, 16 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Title

[edit]

Since the article describes in great details, Peshwas who held the position before Balaji Vishwanath, I believe the title of the article should be changed to Peshwa. The dynasty only started with Balaji Vishwanath. Having said that, the Balaji and his descendents (The Peshwa dynasty) does deserve a separate article.Thanks.Jonathansammy (talk) 14:02, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. This is not a dynasty. utcursch | talk 15:13, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Extended Textual Content for Lifestyle Section

[edit]

If anybody knows more regarding lifestyle and political stature during the Confederacy time, let us update it here. Not much could be found on the Internet when I tried. Books were a better source though so maybe try that. Andybro03 (talk) 17:47, 23 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Titular Image/ Thumbnail of Article

[edit]

So I have updated the first image of the article as that of Bajirao-I. Earlier, as Wikipedia considers the first image appearing in the article as the thumbnail, the Peshwa article was represented by Baji Rao-II. He does not showcase the true identity and valour of the Peshwas, as he was the last one to officially hold the position.

As Baji Rao-I is more popular among the general public, and because of his rather successful reign, I have placed the image. If someone wants to improve the short description, or has any better ideas for what should be the titular image, kindly proceed with it. But let us not keep it as Baji Rao-II. Andybro03 (talk) 18:58, 15 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Your addition was a modern sculpture, that doesn't accurately depict the peshwas appearance. SKAG123 (talk) 14:54, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for pointing it out! I have now found an appropriate image with historical accuracy(reconstruction) and have replaced the earlier one. Do notify if issues persist. Andybro03 (talk) 07:39, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I removed the new image. It appears to be fan art and is quite out of the place in the lead. Please see WP:IMAGE.
Thanks SKAG123 (talk) 16:46, 15 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I understand. But the artist is renowned for accurate hostorical depictions. I do not understand the confusion for classifying the painting as 'fan art' because fan art is ether exaggerative or inaccurate (or both), neither of which is seen here.
Thanks for the WP:IMAGE link, checked it out.
The article does not currently hold a proper titular image. The argument does not hold much reasoning, given the accuracy of the painting. Original works by contrast are of much lower quality and with regards to the Peshwa, are notorious for exxagerative depiction of facial 'manly' features, limbs and even eye colour especially the ones we study here at our University and the ones I see on Wikipedia and elsewhere. The one I have uploaded agrees very positively with the actual depiction of the Peshwa acording to various literary accounts (some even from his erstwhile enemies). Let's revert it to as it was before your revert for now and kindly discuss before performing further reverts. Open debate is welcome and much appreciated! Also please do check out the Peshwa Baji Rao page where this image DOES appear in the lead.
Cheers! Andybro03 (talk) 15:35, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
