Catalonia is not a country recognized by FIFA. The section where he played for Catalonia should be removed under national teams Afj82 (talk) 03:27, 7 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Not done I'm not sure what your point is. The article on the Catalonia national football team makes it clear that they are not "not affiliated with either FIFA or UEFA and is therefore not allowed to participate in either the FIFA World Cup or the UEFA European Championship". So
If you're trying to state that only FIFA-recognized national teams should be in player infoboxes, then make the statement (but you'll have to get consensus from the football project by discussing it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football first).
If you're trying to state that it should not be discussed in the "international career" section, the claim is sourced so I don't see it going anywhere. There's already nothing in the "career statistics" section, so you can't mean that. Please explain yourself more clearly. Walter Görlitz (talk) 04:18, 7 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Here you have an official document from the Catalonia Parlament where you can see that his name is “Josep Guardiola i Sala”. So the name should be changed as requested by the other user.
It’s actually the normal way of putting two family names in Catalonia, but if you need an official document, here you have it .

Change "Guardiola Sala" to "Guardiola i Sala". His full surname is "Guardiola i Sala", according to the Catalan naming customs. Wikipedia in essentially every other language adds the "i" between the two surnames. Also, there is no source to support the current version without "i". 2A00:23C5:3408:4101:6D53:BBAC:E13A:2210 (talk) 18:13, 18 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

I think my point was misunderstood. His surname according to the Catalan naming customs (see link above) must contain the "i". This should be the default. It is the current version without "i" that lacks any reliable source. Therefore, unless his surname can be proven to be "Guardiola Sala", Wikipedia should use the version with the "i".2A00:23C5:3408:4101:6D53:BBAC:E13A:2210 (talk) 22:02, 19 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think we understood your point: Catalan nationalism, etc. I think you misunderstood the request to provide a reliable sources that uses the Catalan convention rather than the Spanish convention. Most sources that I found use the Spanish convention: https://www.premierleague.com/managers/5285/Josep-Guardiola/overview , https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/0252-0e764be2c247-18b687939779-1000--josep-guardiola/ , https://www.fifa.com/photos/galleries/josep-guardiola-1621522#barcelona-coach-pep-guardiola-1557781 and I could continue. I appreciate the sentiment, but the sources call him Spanish, not Catalan, and so we should use the Spanish convention unless there is a consistent use of the other. Filmography

[edit source]

I have removed the recently-added filmography section. Adding specific sections like this has been generally avoided in articles whose subjects are non-media professionals, but I think it's worth discussion. In articles about other footballers, you can see prose mentions of prominent media appearances in the public image/reception sections; this is more complicated with the Guardiola article due to his prominence separately as a player and manager. The thought seems to be that as people who aren't actors or presenters etc., the media appearances are a side note to their career (not a focus) and only significant in that they reflect how the players have been received by the public. Including a filmography also begs the question whether all media appearances (e.g. documentaries) should be included - an as himself cameo is no more a proper role than featuring in a documentary.

Discussion should probably focus on whether media appearances are significant enough to warrant filmographies, and if so, which media appearances to include. Kingsif (talk) 12:07, 5 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

For the first photo of Pep coaching at FC Bayern, the photo on the right displays him in 2015, while the subtitle below mentions 2013 incorrectly. The photo file itself was published on Flickr in 2015. So the request is to fix the year of the subtitle from "Bayern Munich in 2013" to "Bayern Munich in 2015". Hope this small fix that should be easily to manage. Detektiv Prime (talk) 08:08, 21 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

The Bundesliga ball behind the coach is from the 2014/15 season (Torfabrik 2014/15), since it's designed after the 2014 World Cup design. Also the player who is wearing a black face mask is Robert Lewandowski, who joined Bayern in 2014 as a free agent, and the reason for the mask is due to an incident from the DFB Pokal's semi finals, which took place on 28th of April 2015. In the match against Borussia Dortmund, where the goalie hit him mid air on the head resulting a concussion. Not sure why the photographer inserted 2013 for the date of the photo taken but the photo was taken around the start of May 2015 Detektiv Prime (talk) 02:01, 22 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Nationality

[edit source]

There is a Wikipedia RfC that reached the consensus to "if sources generally use a certain identity when referring to someone, and it is clear that the person self-identifies with that identity, to use that identity." I think this is one of the cases in which this should be done, as he has indeed made that clear. . So according to that it should be "a Catalan professional football manager" instead of "a Spanish professional football manager". Maybe, it should still be noted somewhere that the national team he played for was the Spanish National Team, but I think the starting biography should be changed. 2A02:A03F:64DD:3F00:74A2:C37D:CF48:116C (talk) 14:10, 12 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{Edit semi-protected}} template.
This seemed clear cut at first, but after reviewing the sources neither actually describe him as Catalan or Spanish. The first says he supports Catalan independence, but doesn't explicitly confirm he identifies as Catalan. The second quotes his biographer, but it is a deprecated source that can't be used. This could probably be settled with other sources but these seem inconclusive.
There's also been some back and forth editing on this recently, so it should be discussed before a change is made. @Dillbob07 and @Bsckr, you may want to weigh in since you've both changed this recently. Jamedeus (talk) 21:02, 24 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Jamedeus, thank you for your answer, I definitely think more people should discuss it as I'm not 100% sure either, I tried contacting User talk:Scoelho86#Pep Guardiola as he reverted my edit but I got no answer.
What I disagree on is that he "doesn't explicitly confirm he identifies as Catalan.", in the BBC article they quote him saying "We Catalans, along with our democratic government and institutions, want to vote so we can decide [...]"
Regards, Bsckr (talk) 10:29, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Jamedeus no one seems to be weighing in, do you have an opinion on this? or should we move the discussion elsewhere? Regards, Bsckr (talk) 15:52, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Bsckr I don't have a strong opinion or particular knowledge on this issue. However, at this point I think its fair to change it back given the RfC, your BBC link, and this discussion with 2 requests to use Catalan and no objections. I just restored the wording from your most-recent edit and added a note to direct people to the talk page before changing it again. Jamedeus (talk) 22:08, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Guardiola identifies him as a Catalan. The sentence: Catalan professional manager from Spain its perfect. Panenkazo (talk) 17:30, 8 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
The RfC itself has no clear consensus on whether it should or shouldn't contain the nationality like this. Since its a football article and Catalonia is not a FIFA-recognizable nation (it is not a nation per se), we should refer to him as a Spanish football manager, not Catalan. BRDude70 (talk) 23:32, 8 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Plus, it is a very clear breach of consensus: I don't see anybody calling Raúl (footballer) a Madrilenian football manager and former player, or Dorival Júnior as a paulista football coach and former player. Correct sentences use nations, not states. BRDude70 (talk) 23:33, 8 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Catalonia is officially considered a nation. The community of Madrid does not. You are making comments as when Sergio Ramos said he spoke the Andalusian language.. Yes, not exist this language. Panenkazo (talk) 00:20, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
The fact that FIFA does not recognize the Catalan Federation does not mean that it does not exist. This page, like that of other footballers, does not only contain content about their professional activity. Pep Guardiola is an activist and has been on political lists in favor of Catalonia. There is also content relating to his private life, investments, companies, ideology. It doesn't have to be just an exclusively sports page. Enough of this ignorance. Panenkazo (talk) 00:30, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ignorance? Seriously? Mr. @Panenkazo, I was not the one who added a word to multiple intros against the consensus just because I wanted to. YOU were the one who did it. Read the RfC again, and stop vandalizing articles because you want to add a personal agenda about Catalan nacionalism. Even though Guardiola's article is correct according to the RfC (which remains a good load of nonsense for me), 99% of the other articles you edited aren't.
Gather sources and edit in an UNBIASED manner, which as far as I could tell, is not your case. BRDude70 (talk) 04:39, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Like it or not, there is no doubt that Guardiola and other Spanish sportsmen/women are also Catalan. The fact that Catalonia is a nation is a legally and officially established fact, not because I am a Catalan nationalist. On most occasions they have represented Catalonia with the respective national teams. I'm not making anything up or doing any kind of vandalism. It doesn't matter your opinion, they are Catalans. Panenkazo (talk) 07:08, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
There is no doubt that Guardiola and other sportpersons are from Catalonia. He have represented Catalonia. However, identification or self-identification is a separate issue. But it is clear there is consensus to include the fact of their origin.
See coment of administrator @Black Kite: on @BrazilianDude70: talk page. It is a current/similar debate there. Panenkazo (talk) 08:19, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
The actual/current sentence "is a Catalan professional football manager and former player from Spain", does not say at any time that Pep Guardiola has Catalan nationality. He simply specifies that he is a Catalan person (a fact that cannot be debated) from Spain. Panenkazo (talk) 11:50, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Bro it is so gravely dishonest of you to compare those different things to Catalonian identity. Catalonian is not some arbitrary subdivision, it’s a centuries old national identity. This is just bait smh. ~2025-31776-35 (talk) 19:49, 7 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Paul Vaurie, regarding your last changes to the article, I disagree and think they should at least be discussed beforehand. There has been quite some discussion about the topic, and the consensus so far, is that contrary to what you say in the change log, Catalan is a valid nationality in Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:Using Catalan in a biography lede and the RfC on Spanish regional identity.

Regards, Bsckr (talk) 22:53, 29 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

In an article like this, there should be little room for debate on the matter, given that Pep Guardiola has consistently identified as Catalan rather than Spanish, and has publicly expressed support for Catalonia’s independence.
As Spain is a plurinational state, it is not unusual for citizens from some of its constituent nations (such as Catalonia or the Basque Country) to identify primarily with their own national identity rather than with Spain. This is why such distinctions are reflected in the relevant articles. Beethoven (talk) 21:30, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

I request that the following paragraph be (re)moved.

In February 2026, Guardiola was criticized by the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester & Region after publicly criticizing Israel’s military actions in Gaza, describing the situation there as “genocide” and expressing concern for civilian victims, including children, in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine. The council urged him to “focus on football,” expressing concern that his comments could inadvertently fuel antisemitism and noting he had not shown solidarity with the local Jewish community following a previous attack on a Manchester synagogue.[185][186][187]

This is irrelevant to a section dedicated to his managerial career. It appears to have been included with little consideration other than to spread slander. If it must be included, a new section dedicated to his political impact should be created. Trimester9072 (talk) 11:20, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

While I understand the source of the information, I’m struggling to see how it relates to his managerial career at Manchester City. If you believe it’s appropriate to include it, why isn’t the following personal information also included, as it occurred during his time managing Manchester City:
"Guardiola met his wife Cristina Serra when he was 18. They married on 29 May 2014. They have three children named Maria, Màrius and Valentina. Serra and Guardiola split in 2025. He is a distant relative to Spanish politician Anna Balletbò."
This is because his divorce is unrelated to his career, so it would be illogical to include it in a section dedicated to his professional achievements.
Additionally , why is the following information included under Personal Life and not Managerial Career?
"Guardiola supports the political independence of Catalonia. In 2015, he confirmed that he would participate in the pro-independence coalition, Junts pel Sí, in that year's regional parliamentary election. He has spoken in support of the people of Palestineand condemned the civilian loss of life in the Gaza War, referring to the situation as “genocide in Palestine”. The Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester & Region criticised him for this statement, warning that it could fuel antisemitic acts and also noted that he had not publicly expressed solidarity with the local Jewish community following the October 2025 attack on the Heaton Park synagogue." It being supported by sources doesn't mean that it is WP:DUE to be included. And it isn't due, the opinion of the head of some organisation regarding his opinions is not what that section is for — 🧀Cheesedealer !!!⚟ 06:42, 10 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Nationality is wrong. There is no such as Catalan nationality.

[edit source]

Change Catalan to Spanish. It does not make sense define him as Catalan, same way you would never describe John Lennon in the first statement as a Liverpudlian singer. You say he was English, right? So, you have to define Guardiola as Spanish.

The argument of "he defines himself as Catalan" is absurd. The nationality is not based on one's opinion. The correct point would be add that information, saying "he defines himself as Catalan rather than Spanish". That's okay. But defining in the first statement as a Catalan is incorrect, and is a source of ignorance. I would recommend to fix it now. Conversely, I would do it by myself when I could, or I would ask for support on Internet (I'm sure I can get a lot of support...). So, let's fix it in a good manner without more discussion... I've read it and I still consider it wrong. The consensus in an encyclopedia is "Name" + "is" + "nationality ACCORDING TO INTERNATIONAL LAW" + "profession"... ~2026-26784-61 (talk) 00:10, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Correct opening sentence

[edit source]

The lead sentence should say "is a Spanish professional football manager and former player from Catalonia." Please find me ANY other examples on Wikipedia where Catalan comes first for a football person. the correct formatting is found at Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas, for example. Paul Vaurie (talk) 01:37, 17 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

The idea here is that Catalans are inherently from Spain, while Spanish people are not all from Catalonia. Catalonia is a part of Spain. We also cannot omit Spain/Spanish fully. Paul Vaurie (talk) 01:38, 17 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Guardiola having run for political office as a Catalan on a platform of Catalan independence is what complicates this. Bonmatí's article is still an edit war over plays for Spain vs possibly the most anti-Spain Catalan family conceivable. Putellas has defended Catalan independence leaders but gone so far as to advocate for it, so is more stable. If they weren't footballers who had worn the Spain shirt, it would be quite cut and dry for Catalan. There should probably be a full RfC for Guardiola. Kingsif (talk) 13:23, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Nationality is wrong. He is not Catalan, he is Spanish. The natio ality in Wikipedia follows the real nationality and not the self-perception of the person. You could stubbornly keep him as a Catalan, which makes the website wrong, and is a problem for the reputation of the Wikipedia. For instance: I'm a teacher, if students ask me I will say this page is incorrect because he is Spanish, and I would explain why and what are the Catalans as a nationality in Spain, but this situation does not justify referring him as a Catalan in the first statement.

Change it now, or it will be changed in the short term anyway when someone with good criteria has access to editing... ~2026-32108-88 (talk) 00:06, 31 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

RfC on nationality in lede

[edit source]

Should the first sentence describe Guardiola as a Spanish football manager and former player from Catalonia ("Spain first") or a Catalan football manager and former player from Spain ("Catalan first")?

Background:

Kingsif (talk) 13:51, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • Catalan first Considering 1. Guardiola was an international footballer who represented Spain and it may be confusing if 'Spanish' is not first, however, he played for the Catalan national team consistently including after retiring from the Spanish team and "made it clear that he represented Spain because there was no other option, but if he could have, he would have played for Catalunya." 2. His current notability is predominantly as a football manager, so any confusion about being an international footballer for a team different to the first-stated nationality is reduced due to the distance of time since it was relevant. His last international appearance for Spain was before Wikipedia; his last international appearance for Catalonia was in 2005. 3. He ran for political office on a platform of Catalan independence, endorsed by both Democratic Convergence of Catalonia and Republican Left of Catalonia. His notability is not politics, but this gives clear understanding on how he personally identifies. Kingsif (talk) 14:16, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Catalan first Guardiola strongly identifies as Catalan and also widely described that way. NicoR8 (talk) 14:31, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Catalan first. Per MOS:NATIONALITY and the 2018 RfC on Spanish regional identities: There is a consensus that in cases of dispute about what identity the lead sentence should use in Spanish biographies, that if sources generally use a certain identity when referring to someone, and it is clear that the person self-identifies with that identity, to use that identity. Considering Guardiola's strong and consistently expressed Catalan national identity, his statements over many years, and his unequivocal support for Catalonia's independence from Spain, "Catalan" is the more accurate and policy-based option, while "Spanish" would be neither objective nor fully faithful.
As comments above have pointed out, the only reason Guardiola played for Spain's national team was that he had no other option, since Catalonia's national team is still not allowed to compete in official international tournaments. Guardiola himself stated in 1998 that if he could choose, he would play for Catalonia.[1] Refusing to play for Spain was also not really an option, because under Spanish law players could face severe fines or even suspension of their football licences.[2] It therefore does not seem objective or fair to use this legal situation as a reason to distort the subject's actual identity. In fact, now that the 2026 FIFA World Cup is taking place and Spain is playing in the final this Sunday, Spanish media have taken the opportunity to criticise Guardiola for not supporting Spain in an interview: Guardiola refuses to support the [Spanish] national team in the World Cup final despite having played 47 matches for it.
Having said all that, Guardiola is principally notable for his managerial career, not for his international playing career during the 1990s. In ordinary sporting coverage, major English-language outlets repeatedly identify him as Catalan without issue. BBC Sport described him as "the Catalan genius";[3] The Guardian referred to him simply as "the Catalan";[4] and Reuters described him as a "Catalan coach".[5] These are not articles about Catalan politics, but ordinary reports about his football career. It was also during these years as a manager that Guardiola began consistently wearing a yellow ribbon during matches, in support of the imprisoned Catalan pro-independence politicians and activists.[6]
I will end with a quote from Pep Guardiola, given during a pre-match press conference in Manchester in 2024, which seems particularly fitting for this discussion:
We don't decide where we're born. Mum and Dad decide that and nine months later we're here. I didn't decide to be Catalan, you don't decide to be English.Pep Guardiola, Reuters, 18 October 2024[7]
Beethoven (talk) 11:05, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Catalan first He is currently a football manager and that's where he is most notable for now. Tepkunset (talk) 13:55, 20 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment: Per 2018 RFC and Wikipedia:Using Catalan in a biography lede quoted above, it should be acceptable to use the 'Catalan' introduction first before Spanish if sources attribute same. His own inclination seems to be towards Catalans[8] but there are variety of source which do not attribute him that way or do not mention either of nationalities.
For example, existing reference[7] from quote above address him as "The Spaniard", other articles omit nationality altogether. For example, here, here, or here Nisingh.8 (talk)
I'm not sure how much use sources which don't include nationality are here, and if that's your best effort to find sources which don't describe him as Catalan, I think that's quite indicative… Kingsif (talk) 08:09, 22 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Catalan first per the above reasoning from other editors. Put simply this is what Pep would have wanted himself and the Catalan identity for anyone of that area, this is the strongest part of their identity not being Spanish. AadamentAardvark (talk) 21:47, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
