Validity categories
[edit]Categories "5 or less", "5 to 10", and "10" are somewhat poorly named (since, for most people, "5 to 10" is an inclusive interval - it includes both 5 and 10.) The same problem is partly present in the map (which says "5 to 9".)
Unless there are countries issuing passports for a fractional number of years, it would be best to go with "5 or less" / "6 to 9" / "10". --Itinerant1 (talk) 21:17, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
Categories
[edit]I agree that the categories are a bit hard to digest, but I understand how they are simpler. How about adding an info column that lists out specifically the number of years and facilitates including a source for each country? Wingedbeaver (talk) 18:38, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
Category table is not helping
[edit]I think it may be in violation of WP:WHENTABLE. There are plenty of cases where not using a table is the better option than figuring out how to improve the table. Or at least the ✖ and ✔ 3-column isn't helping. Why not just list the values in a single column like you would any value? And if countries neatly group into three categories, why not do so without a table? E.g.
Countries with passports expiring in 5 years: A, B, C... Countries with passports expiring in 10 years: D, E, F...

Done I've gone ahead and removed the 
and 
columns. The meaning was apparently confusing to both the readers and editors. There were plenty of mistakes in how the columns were edited. It was likely a mistake to have used this scheme in the first place. --Nidaana (talk) 07:55, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
Addendum and more note on the edits. First of all we have no one but to blame ourselves to have suffered for a decade under Designguy84's 2014 scheme of using the boolean columns for 5, 5-10, and 10 years. These were systematically converted to numbers (e.g. YNN would be 5, YNY would be "5 or 10"). For countries with a in the middle column, I systematically went through each of those country's passport article page to determine the expiration date. I could not find information either on Wikipedia or elsewhere on the Internet about Santomean passport expiration date, so I left that with a "citation needed" tag. --Nidaana (talk) 08:05, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
Map does not match table
[edit]For example the map says Indonesia is 5 years but the table says 10 years.
Is there a way to generate a map to keep them in sync, rather than having a static image? Mikel Ward (talk) 05:48, 8 June 2025 (UTC)
