This represents a new, formalized way of describing an existing inventory management technique. It was the topic for a keynote at a major conference last week and is being taught under this moniker in at least two academic environments and several publications will be coming out in February to support it.
Think of it as 'Big Data' just as the term 'Big Data' was being coined.

I sell my unneeded (byut not unwanted) over the road truck inventory to A company and they sell it back to me as I need it. I don;t have carrying costs. They also sell those parts to other service people who need identical parts, but mostly I'm able to get those parts when I need them. PIM is a vital part of our OR truck service business.
