[edit]According to Roman records a tribe or clan in the fertile Southeast of Yorkshire were called Parisii; it is assumed that they were immigrants from the Isle de France area who moved to preserve their independance from Roman control - does anyone know of any historical sources that support this theory?? I'm quite doubtful of the etymology for such names as Parrish as being from the Parisii tribe, given that the Roman conquest of Gaul occurred almost a thousand years before surnames became commonly used.
'Parrish' could mean 'of Paris', but this is probably much more likely to refer to recent French expatriates than to refer to Parisii. People may wish to believe they are descendants of Celtic warriors (and many of us probably are) but I don't think wikipedia is a place for these sorts of unsupported etymologies. --Saforrest 21:00, Jul 5, 2004 (UTC)
