[edit]Anyone know how to say this in Old Icelandic, or where I can find the title mentioned in the Sagas? --Iustinus 07:12, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- 20 years in the future, I also agree with this. The Old Icelandic term should be included if it is known, and I think it would be useful to explain whether the English term was just made up in the 18th century or something, or is it a direct translation? Anyway, if anyone is also thinking this is 2045, hello from the 20's, and ping me. Mrfoogles (talk) 04:37, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- It looks very suspicious to me. None of the sources cited are reliable scholarly literature and I cannot find an Old Norse form of the term. Mårtensås (talk) 21:30, 10 February 2026 (UTC)
Possible sources
[edit]I see here some possible sources. Bearian (talk) 02:49, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- None of these are good sources. Pinging @Mrfoogles.
- The existence of this 'position' is very doubtful. I've looked through the relevant sagas and not found any Norse equivalent. Erik the red was the paramount chieftain, i.e. the supreme hǫfðingi on Greenland, but that does not mean that there was a title corresponding to the English 'paramount chieftain'. The article thus seems to be WP:OR based on a misunderstanding of encyclopedia articles which has eventually been reinforced by WP:CIRCULAR non-specialist sources like Heritage Daily or the Canadian Encyclopedia. If no WP:RS can be found the article should be deleted. Mårtensås (talk) 21:45, 10 February 2026 (UTC)
- Maybe it can be converted to a disambiguation page listing the people sometimes referred to as "paramount chieftains of Greenland"? Agreed that a page dedicated to the concept that someone can be the supreme chief of a region is probably unnecessary. Mrfoogles (talk) 03:11, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
