Scope and future of page

[edit]

The current page name is "Pancreatic elastase". The current scope of the page seems to be the chymotrypsin like elastase family. However the name Pancreatic elastase is misleading, since CELA1 isn't produced in the pancreas, and discussion of origin similarly doesn't apply to CELA1. Though confusingly, the enzyme name for the type of enzyme activity done by CELA1 (and only CELA1: EC 3.4.21.36) is still "pancreatic elastase" according to ExplorEnz/Expasy. Since that EC number links here, it seems like that might have been the older scope of this page, but that seems redundant with the CELA1 page. It seems like "chymotrypsin like elastase family" might be a reasonable scope, though that name is very long, and there's a lot of overlap with the elastase page, which discusses this family + 3 other enzymes. Maybe the names will settle into something more reasonable, and we can figure out how to rename this page (or change the scope) Pabnau (talk) 21:22, 4 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Pancreatic elastase → Chymotrypsin-like elastases – As I discussed a bit in Talk:Pancreatic elastase#Scope and future of page, the term "pancreatic elastase" is ambiguous and often misleading, partly due to various misidentifications and conflations of CELAs in the literature. Here are some example usages of "pancreatic elastase" found:

The current page seems to primarily be about Chymotrypsin-like elastases, with a couple sections specific to CELA1. Since CELA1 already has its own page, it seems like it is best to move this page to "Chymotrypsin-like elastases". The CELA1 bits can probably be added to the CELA1 page, or expanded with more info about other family members.

Other options:

  • "Chymotrypsin like elastase": HGNC uses the spaced form, while uniprot uses the hyphenated form "Chymotrypsin-like elastase". Since uniprot is usually the default we use for naming based on MOS:MCB, "Chymotrypsin-like elastases" seems preferable for consistency
  • Chymotrypsin-like elastase family: Arguably slightly more accurate since CELA3A and CELA3B apparently have very little elastase activity, but also feels like its getting a bit too long, and different from the HGNC's naming of the group. (Uniprot doesn't list this family, but instead includes the CELAs as part of the larger group: "peptidase S1 family. Elastase subfamily", which includes Neutrophil elastase among others) Pabnau (talk) 20:13, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
