Pacman?!

Pacman is not the backend for packages in Arch Linux. All bindings for PackageKit are linked to the Arch Linux Package Manager (alpm), of which Pacman is just a frontend.

Since version 3.0.0, pacman has been the front-end to libalpm(3), the “Arch Linux Package Management” library. This library allows alternative front-ends to be written (for instance, a GUI front-end).

PackageKit receiving major updates as of June 2026

As per this post by Matthias Klumpp, a new PackageKit interface has been written from scratch to add several additional features. This means this section in the article:

> "Although PackageKit is still maintained, no major features have been developed since around 2014,"

is no longer true. Matthias also speaks about how "a lot of changes will be coming to PackageKit", although I haven't yet been able to find specific itemized sources or an overview of new features.
