I did some Copy editing or this article

Hi everyone, I noticed this article has been flagged for copy editing and tone issues for a while. I’ve gone ahead and done a sweep to make the prose a bit more "encyclopedic" and fix some of the clunky phrasing.

Summary of changes:

General CE: Fixed some subject-verb agreement issues and cleaned up redundant dates/locations.

Tone: Adjusted the "History" section to be more neutral. Some of the phrasing about "countering unfavorable issues" sounded a bit like a press release, so I've reworded it to be more matter-of-fact.

Grammar: Fixed some missing commas in the lists of countries and updated "besting" to "defeating" for better flow.
